This month begins with a solar eclipse in Libra, on October 2nd at 18:46 (UT). It’s an annular solar eclipse and it will last for nearly eight minutes. As I wrote this, I started to get a sense of ‘deja vu’, so I looked at the post I wrote about last year’s solar eclipse in Libra. At that time, the news cycles were dominated by the awful events that were playing out in Israel and Gaza. The attacks on Israel occurred a week before the eclipse and the retaliatory mass bombings of Gaza started around the time of the solar eclipse in 2023 and – inevitably – resulted in colossal loss of life.
A new year and a new solar eclipse in Libra – yet here we are again. The situation has not improved. In fact, it seems to be getting worse. Can we expect it to ratchet up to another level around the time of this year’s solar eclipse in Libra? It seems likely that this will happen; the reputation that solar eclipses have for bringing evil is unlikely to be diminished by this particular lunation. In this post, I’m going to take a deep dive into this solar eclipse in Libra and try to explain why the sign of peace is not always as peaceful or balanced as it’s made out to be.
Solar Eclipse in Libra 2024: The Essentials
This solar eclipse is an annular solar eclipse and that’s important because it symbolises a fire being lit, the sparks that ignite something of importance. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is at its furthest point from the Earth. The Moon’s shadow does not completely obscure the Sun, so the ring of fire remains visible. This gives an annular solar eclipse a significant astrological and spiritual meaning; it signifies an increase in intensity and passion. It signifies change, it’s transformative – and it marks a process of purification.
From this, you can see that It holds many of the qualities we associate with Pluto and Scorpio – and I don’t have to remind you of their connection with extremes, despair and pain. Still, this is a solar eclipse in Libra, so how do this solar eclipse’s transformative powers align with the qualities we associate with Libra, the sign of peace and justice? The answer is, once more, found in the astrological and spiritual meanings contained within the solar eclipse: this is a time of increased connection, and the alignment of the Sun and Moon reminds us of the need to find balance, harmony and reconciliation.
Now, this is the hard part: when you combine all of the factors described above, it does not necessarily mean that the transformative process will be easy or peaceful. Solar eclipses confront us with deep fears and situations that seem almost impossible to accept yet, somehow, we have to work out how to do so. Libra is a communicative and relational sign, so those difficulties often manifest in the arena of relationships. We need to remember that the bond between sworn enemies is no less strong than the bond between lovers. Unconditional hate is a powerful force.
So, how do you transform that situation? In astrology, every problem carries the seed from which you can grow the solution. Solar eclipses can be shockingly brutal – and Libra can appear as intransigent and stubborn as its fellow Venus-ruled sign Taurus – but the Libra impulse is always directed at creating balance. Retaliation creates imbalances that shift from one extreme position to the other. Balance requires resolution and agreement, and that is what diplomatic Libra seeks to achieve. Solar eclipses will often use shock tactics to prompt us towards that path.
At a personal level, this solar eclipse will have the most powerful effect on those of you with planets or points that share the same degree of Libra – 10˚02′ of that sign – or have placements that are within close orb to that degree by aspect. I would use a close orb of around 1˚-2˚ for optimal impact – but eclipses can extend their range beyond that. However the solar eclipse in Libra manifests in your life, it will mean you need to regain balance and harmony in some part of your life. There will be no quick fix – and remember: the most important relationship you have is with yourself. That is where balance needs to be found.
Solar Eclipse in Libra 2024: The Chart

Solar Eclipse in Libra 2024: The Aspects
The chart for the solar eclipse in Libra is dominated by a grand trine in the emotional water signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and between Venus, Mars and Saturn situated in those signs. The solar eclipse in Libra connects into the energy of the grand trine via a square aspect to Mars in Cancer and through a semi-sextile (30˚) aspect to Venus in Scorpio and a quincunx (inconjunct – 150˚) aspect to Saturn in Pisces. In predictive astrology, trine aspects are linked to ongoing situations, or events that happen at speed.
The square aspect from the solar eclipse to Mars adds dynamism and tension to the solar eclipse chart, and the quincunx/semi-sextile is a sign of something irritating – and even surprising. What is does signify is an uncertain or unexpected outcome to whatever the ongoing situation may be. In the background we have the Jupiter-Saturn transiting square – an important staging post in the Jupiter – Saturn cycle that began in 2020, and the transiting minor trine between the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Solar Eclipse in Libra Square Mars in Cancer
Dynamic, tense and emotional events are triggered and upset the balance; that’s the story of the solar eclipse in Libra square Mars in Cancer. Mars in Cancer is sensitive, defensive, reactive, tribal and can be passive aggressive. The square aspect demands action – and both Mars and the solar eclipse represent a trigger moment. This marks the beginning of some major changes – and they are not going to be easy to negotiate (Libra). Events that unfold around this time may be anguished, emotional and depressingly difficult to control.
The big stories are about family, home, homeland, attachments – and fighting for them. If that causes resentment and hostility, you may have to hope that another side to this Mars placement makes its presence felt – and that is the capacity for patience. Unfortunately, patience and caution are likely to be tested to destruction. The solar eclipse in Libra brings people together, but that won’t achieve anything if only one side is willing to play the game. The game may turn out to be the waiting game – and that’s no consolation if you feel that time is running short.
Except time isn’t running short. This time around, Mars has an extended stay in Cancer, with a long retrograde period in store – until April 2025. During much of this time, it will also be opposing Pluto in Capricorn, so the energy that plays out in the aftermath of this eclipse is going to be deep, dark and dramatic. Events may cause you to leap to someone’s defence – but ask yourself, who is the victim here? Everything outside of your comfort zone appears a dangerous place. This solar eclipse in Libra square Mars aspect is seeding an uncertain few months. Long term radical change is a nailed on certainty.
Solar Eclipse in Libra Semi-sextile Venus in Scorpio
The semi-sextile aspect in astrology usually signifies aspects between planets in neighbouring signs – and that’s the case here. The solar eclipse in Libra has little in common with Venus in neighbouring Scorpio, but they are going to have to get used to living next door. Like all neighbours, relations may be cordial – until they are not. Neighbours are easily upset – especially when boundaries are transgressed. And this is one of those moments where that could occur. Neighbours are not just the people who live next door; they are our fellow citizens and, in global terms, the country next door.
Venus in Scorpio does not negotiate. What they want, they want – and it’s non-negotiable. That’s problematic considering the solar eclipse in Libra is concerned with resolution. You may have to work around a situation where there is a non-negotiable element – and that always makes the path to peace a tricky one. It’s also possible that fewer options will work in your favour. If the obvious solution has been ruled out, you may have to go the route less travelled. It may take longer and be a tougher negotiation, but (hopefully) it will get you there in the end. It’s like a game of chess. Strategy is everything.
Solar Eclipse in Libra Quincunx Saturn in Pisces
Time is always an issue with Saturn. And irritation is always an issue with a quincunx aspect. You may be irritated by how long something is taking to resolve. You may annoyed at a lack of progress or deliberate obfuscation. You may be frustrated by backtracking and obstinacy. The only answers are patience (see above) and compromise. They are the obvious answers to the questions posed by a solar eclipse in Libra. The problem is, it may take a long time to reach that conclusion, or find an acceptable compromise position.
Compromise is not a weak choice; sometimes compromises have to be enforced or imposed on parties who are unwilling to agree. That’s annoying to all concerned, and that’s why compromises often result in a situation that no-one really wanted, but they represent the best result available at the time. That is one of the major themes of this solar eclipse: it marks the beginning of a process that will result – at both a personal and a global level – in going to places you didn’t expect to go to, but having to make the best of it when you get there. Saturn in Pisces marks the end of an era – and that takes some getting used to.
Reconciling yourself to things that don’t go as planned, or not getting the result that you want and having to adjust to a reality check are all part of the compromise package. At a personal level, accepting that you may need to change your expectations is a good place to start. In a rapidly changing and unstable world, you have to get back to the basics. Saturn in Pisces makes our structures (Saturn) uncertain (Pisces). There may be issues with going with the flow. Resistance and resilience will be major concerns in the coming months.
Solar Eclipse in Libra: The Background Noise
At the beginning I mentioned the Jupiter – Saturn transiting square that is such a major influence in the heavens right now. This is is the first major milestone in the Jupiter – Saturn cycle that began with the ‘Great Conjunction’ around the New Year of 2020-21. That signalled a new era in the shape of society – and we are now seeing those changes taking place. As a square aspect, it’s tense and dynamic – and that’s going to be reflected in the events that shape the world.
We have recently entered a new Jupiter – Uranus cycle. That’s concerned with progress and radical change – and that is certainly going to be part of the picture, regardless of the fact that it’s not part of the solar eclipse configuration. Then there’s Pluto. Pluto’s ingress into Aquarius – for the final time – is imminent and that really marks the moment when the process of change and revolution is fixed. There will be no going back from that moment.
And there’s more: the outer planets are also in a minor trine configuration and that reflects the ongoing inevitability of major change. All of the outer planets will change signs within the coming months – and that will be a significant moment. Everything will have changed – and the goal (set out by this solar eclipse in Libra) will be to regain a sense of equilibrium as you navigate a world that presents as a new and exciting – but it’s also a dangerous and uncertain place.
