The lunar eclipse in Libra signals that we are, once again, in an eclipse season. This lunar eclipse – the first eclipse of 2024 – is the third eclipse of the Aries-Libra eclipse cycle. It’s also the first lunar eclipse in that cycle – and the only lunar eclipse of that cycle – and that makes it a unique and special event. All full moons bring us to culmination, but lunar eclipses do so in a way that’s dynamic and evolutionary. Something ends in order for something else to take its place – but eclipses seem to bring this process about in often random or accidental ways; unforeseen changes of direction or unexpected revelations may occur around the time of the lunar eclipse in Libra.
Signals, signs, messages and outbursts often accompany a lunar eclipse, because the Moon always has a impact on an emotional level, so pay attention to feelings that surface – or resurface – around this time. That’s especially true for those of you who have a planet or point in contact with this lunar eclipse in Libra – take a careful note of what the Universe is telling you over the next few days, especially if those messages come from someone you know and love. A lunar eclipse in Libra emphasises partnership, so what will this lunar eclipse (and your partner) be triggering to you at an emotional level? Let’s dig into the detail to find out.
Lunar Eclipse in Libra: The Essentials
The Lunar eclipse takes place on March 25th at 07:13 (UT) and it falls on 5˚13′ Libra. It’s a penumbral lunar eclipse, a fairly common form of lunar eclipse. Unlike a total or partial eclipse, the effects of a penumbral eclipse are subtle; due too the alignment between the Sun, Earth and Moon, the light reflecting from the Moon’s surface is dimmed rather than blocked. There is a subtle change is the light level – and that subtlety and nuance is reflected in the ways we respond to the eclipse.
Those of you with planets and points in a close orb to that degree (I would suggest 2˚ maximum) will feel its impact more than most. If you have planets or points in dynamic aspect to the eclipse (conjunction, square or opposition) you will notice the eclipse with more immediacy and you may find it more stressful, as whatever needs to end (or change) will feel more personal. You may even feel under attack in an emotional sense – particularly if you have plants and points in opposition to the lunar eclipse.
With a trine or sextile aspect, the messages tend to come quickly and they may provide you with the opportunity to get in touch with your own needs and feeling responses. That’s vitally important if you have reverted to habits or taken refuge in an ‘uncomfortable comfort zone’ that’s not serving you well. It’s easy (trine or sextile aspect) to be triggered if you are touched by a lunar eclipse – particularly in relation to emotional complexes that have their roots in the past – and that may make this an emotionally volatile time.
As the lunar eclipse in Libra reflects the light of the sun, it may be advisable for you to reflect on why you are feeling so triggered, and look into yourself to the cause , so that you can release yourself from some of the unconscious complexes that may be preventing you from relating as well as you could – both to your own needs and those of other people. For example, if you find yourself projecting your issues onto other people – or you find yourself a victim of projection, the eclipse may bring that to a head in way that requires you to make some adjustments to accommodate those imperfections. This eclipse reminds us that nothing is perfect.
The Aries – Libra Eclipse Cycle: What Does it Mean?
The Aries – Libra symbolism – of self and others – carried by this lunar eclipse is a dynamic you will need to acknowledge. As this is the only lunar eclipse in this particular Aries-Libra cycle of eclipses, you have a ‘one time only’ opportunity to deal with any emotional residue of the past, particularly as it affects how you relate – in the widest sense of that word. Negotiating the space between yourself and others is at the core of the Aries – Libra dynamic, so use the lunar eclipse in Libra to make peace with yourself first and foremost; you may discover it’is the key to resolving any eclipse related stress.
The opposition between Aries and Libra is emphasised by the lunar eclipse, and it stresses the oppositional nature of independence and commitment. The lunar eclipse in Libra emphasises tension between partners in a personal (or professional) sense, and in a wider sense, it emphasises the tensions between opposing factions. Unless you have had your head buried in the sand, you will be aware of how this is playing out at a global level: the stark political divisions that are apparent in many parts of the world (especially the US and UK), the terrible situation in Gaza – all of those, sadly, are emblematic of this Aries – Libra eclipse cycle and the nature of the polarity it contains.
The Aries – Libra eclipse cycle has been with us since the rare hybrid solar eclipse in Aries in April 2023. Themes of war and peace are always present in this world – but they have been intensified during this time. The solar eclipse in Libra, shows a need for resolution. Achieving resolution is no easy task, as Aries is a headstrong, volatile, ego-driven and explosive sign. We know how that works on the world stage, and dealing with that to find any kind of equitable solution (Libra) is a delicate process. In your personal life, things may become ‘snappy’ or difficult too – so be prepared to smooth things over if you can.
And be prepared for the peace to be transient. The chart for this lunar eclipse in Libra is one sided to say the least! Restored relationships, the need to broker peaceful settlements and the existence of back channel diplomacy may be read in this chart – but every positive outcome carries the potential for a negative one – free will lies at the heart of astrology and negative choices are a likely as positive ones. What is certain however, is that the presence of Pluto in this lunation will show that peace and resolution have a high price.
Lunar Eclipse in Libra: The Chart

The chart for this lunar eclipse in Libra is so typical for the heavens in early 2024. The lunar eclipse finds the Moon in Libra not just opposite the Sun in Aries, but on the opposite side of the chart to almost all of the planets. With the exception of Jupiter and Uranus (in an approaching conjunction in Taurus), all of the planets are in the fourth quadrant – the sector of social integration and participation – and (with the exception of Pluto in Aquarius) they are bundled together across Pisces and Aries.
This is the classic ‘bucket’ chart configuration in astrology and it places the lunar eclipse in Libra at the handle of the bucket, in the sector where we need to be grounded, creative and productive. The Lunar eclipse here speaks of building anew on the foundations of the past – and this aligns well with the symbolism of the planets in the opposite sector of the chart. The transition of the planets, from Pisces into Aries over the coming weeks and months, speaks of renewal. One cycle of the zodiac will complete as another begins – and this is where we are now,
The Moon is the ‘handle’ position shows a need to care, whether that’s in the private or public sphere. The challenge is for that energy to be channelled well – and that is a major challenge because it’s going to take some single mindedness or singularity of purpose to achieve what’s required. I want you to look at the planets that ‘book end’ the configuration – Pluto in Aquarius and the Jupiter Uranus approaching conjunction: the lunar eclipse in Libra signifies a moment of dramatic and radical change – this really is a single issue eclipse.
Lunar Eclipse in Libra: The Aspects
From its isolated position in Libra, the Moon makes one major aspect – a trine to Pluto in Aquarius. I’ve written extensively about Pluto’s ingress into Aquarius and how that signifies a major shift in the ‘tectonic plates’ of world affairs – because Pluto’s ingress into that sign passed over the point of the Great Conjunction back in 2020/21. That revolutionary shift is clearly underway, and the approaching Jupiter – Uranus conjunction (another important cyclical fixture on the celestial calendar) will also be amplifying that process as it moves closer to being exact.
That combination – and Pluto’s permanent shift into Aquarius in November 2024 – is going to make the rest of this year one to remember. Getting back to this lunar eclipse in Libra, the trine aspect to Pluto indicates that nothing is going to get in the way of the process unfolding – and some earth shattering events will be coming down the line at speed. Nothing gets in the way of a trine aspect. Deep truths – and things that have been long hidden – carry the hallmark of Pluto. And they will be revealed. Pluto deals with the fundamentals, the things that remain unaltered, no matter what else happens on the surface.
In the headlong rush into a new age, we may destroy many things that appear precious to us – but the real things of value will remain untouched forever. Opening the channels of communication and being unafraid of getting to the heart of the matter (whatever it may be) will be important around the time of this lunar eclipse. Let us hope that it will bring people together rather than tear them apart.
PS. As I completed drafting this post (almost to the minute) news broke of Catherine, Princess of Wales’s revelation of her cancer diagnosis and the terrible massacre at the Crocus Theatre in Moscow. This Lunar eclipse is certainly making its presence felt…
