The full moon in Cancer on 13th January is the first lunation of 2025, and the emphasis on home and family seems appropriate, as we have several family birthday celebrations this week – including on the day if the full moon. A full moon on your birthday is worthy of its own post, so I’ve earmarked that for the not too distant future. Nonetheless, the first full moon of the new year also highlights more than a personal milestone or celebration; it shines its light on the way ahead and that light reflects the astrology of where we are now. The full moon reminds us of where our focus needs to be.
The full moon in Cancer is powerful and emotional. It shines on all the stuff we have to process emotionally and work our way through. This is the Wolf Moon, and that’s a really good image to work with in the context of this Cancer full moon. Wolves are pack animals; they live in family groups, they educate and take care of their young, they care for injured members of the pack and they work together to make sure there is enough food for everyone in their family. Their bonds are indestructible. Right now, it feels as if we could learn a lot from them. If you feel like howling, go right ahead…
Full Moon in Cancer: The Essentials
The wolf symbolism is so appropriate to the deeper meanings we associate with a full moon in Cancer. Cancer is the family sign. It shows our attachments at the deepest level. It reflects our deepest needs and shows where we are most comfortable. It’s instinctive and sensitive. We feel our way under a full moon in Cancer. It’s a full moon that tells you where you need to take care; self-preservation is big with this sign. So, wherever this full moon makes contact with your natal chart, those themes will be found. This full moon culminates at 23˚ 26′ Cancer, so planets or points in orb with that degree will resonate with this full moon.
As an uncertain new year begins, make yourself comfortable. You may need to, as the signs are that this year will be as turbulent as 2024 – perhaps even more so. All of the radical changes that we have been promised by the heavens over the past few years are here. They are going to take some getting used to, and you are going to have to deal with your responses to those changes. Expect to feel vulnerable, hurt or offended – or in need of extra support – in the house in your natal chart containing the full moon in Cancer. Containment may be a theme this month – particularly if a sensitive matter comes to a head.
So, if you’re feeling touchy, uncertain about what lies ahead, nostalgic for a time when life seemed easier or you feel insecure about life, particularly in the context of an uncertain world, you are not alone. The full moon in Cancer brings those feelings into the light; use this time to put yourself in a good place. You need to be clear about what you need to do to achieve that. Then – and only then – will you be capable of moving forwards in a way that is comfortable for you – and yours.
Full Moon in Cancer: The Chart

The full moon in Cancer chart certainly shows what you’re up against as far as discomfort is concerned. It is conjunct Mars retrograde in Cancer, and by trine – and opposition – it connects directly with the outer planet minor trine that is presently reworking our world in a radical and uncompromising manner. This is a time of confusion and progress, innovation and destruction, and having to have faith in the unknown. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are testing all of us right now, and the big question is, how are you going to cope with that? There is a lot to unpick in this full moon in Cancer.
Full Moon in Cancer: The Aspects
Let’s break this lunation down by aspect: we know that the full moon in Cancer is in aspect to some of the more ‘troublesome’ planets. The questions are, how does that impact on you? And what can you do about it?
Full Moon in Cancer Conjunction Mars Retrograde
Mars is having a long retrograde season, having turned backwards last year in Leo. It’s still in reverse gear in Cancer and besides that, the long retrograde has placed it in extended opposition to Pluto. The retrograde motion means that Mars is in an applying conjunction to the Moon and aggressive Mars on a collision course with the Moon is always cause for concern. Mars in Cancer retrograde in conjunction the Moon is going to bring up some tough emotional issues from the past and locate the firmly in the present.
Cancer is the sign most concerned with history of all kinds – and you may feel as if you’re about to collide with the past, both in a personal and impersonal sense. I’ll deal with the impersonal stuff first: in the most general sense, you may feel as if history is repeating itself – and it’s potentially unwelcome history at that. Mars is combative, even if – in Cancer – that aggression is expressed passively. At a personal level, if that happens, you’ll be dealing with emotional reactions that are familiar to you. There may be ‘passive-aggressive’ issues arising with your mother, family, your home or domestic matters. And you’ve been there before.
Full Moon in Cancer Sextile Uranus
So, if you’ve been there before, what do you need to do about those issues this time around? If you’re to avoid the same emotional outbursts, or allowing your feelings to get the better of you, you need to deal with the situation in a new way. This sextile draws on the energy contained in the outer planet minor trine; you have the opportunity to re-frame the situation and respond to it differently. Break the pattern of your habitual responses – and break some habits too. This full moon isn’t just concerned with how you respond to other people or outer situations, it’s also focused on your feelings about yourself.
You have the chance to break (Uranus) some self-defeating (Mars) habits and behaviors (Moon), and events around the time of the full moon in Cancer will bring any matters of this nature to your attention. I’m also referencing Mars here because Mars retrograde in Cancer has a habit of turning in on itself and any situation that causes you to turn your anger inwards may become an issue around the time of the full moon. One issue you may have is this: you may be easily emotionally triggered, but uncomfortable about expressing your feelings. Use this time to work on overcoming that barrier – but in a positive manner.
Full Moon in Cancer Trine Neptune
Sometimes you need to let go of the past. This is one of those moments. And it’s a powerful moment because the Moon and Neptune are both in their own signs. Your senses may be working overtime, but there is a risk that you will be oversensitive. Clearly this is an aspect that can work several ways, so I’ll deal with the difficult side first, and it’s this: heightened emotional sensitivity (Moon, Neptune) may lead to the kind of emotional outbursts I mentioned earlier. It’s a watery mix, so there may be a lot of tears. I’m not putting a value judgment on this, so tears of joy are also a possibility.
Whether or not you need a tissue, be aware that fiery emotions could get out of control. Letting go (Neptune) of negative emotions is a good thing, but you need to express positive emotions too. The Moon’s conjunction with retrograde Mars shows you may be hesitant to express how you feel – and the trine to Neptune suggests it’s easy to run with that. The important thing will be to respond to any situation, in the way that you feel is right. Try and take the heat out of the situation; accept that you can’t change the past and cut yourself some slack. One day, new dreams will replace the old ones. Let them drift away.
Full Moon in Cancer Opposite Pluto
Pluto has recently moved into Aquarius – and moved our world into another place. The world is being turned upside down – and your personal world may be next on Pluto’s hit list. You never know. Situations may be volatile and frightening. You know – deep down – you’re going to be facing issues that you don’t want to deal with. So, what can you do? Pluto is harsh. You may feel patronized, hurt, ignored, powerless, treated with insensitivity – and worse. This is the aspect of deep, primal rage – and with Pluto in opposition, you may experience that kind of destabilizing feeling coming at you from outside. It’s one more sign of a trigger event…
Remember, at a deep level, everything is connected. The outer planet minor trine signifies a process that’s going to last over the next four years. It’s a process that may apply to any number of things that will have an impact on you, but the message is that you are going to have to radically transform your reactive self to get through it. The good news is that emotional transformation may be necessary (and difficult at first) but it’s also possible to create a new emotional way of being that transforms your life. Use the powerful forces of the Moon, Pluto and Mars to drive that process. Leave the old you behind. And don’t look back.
