The New Moon in Pisces comes during a transitional season, as we hope to leave winter behind us and embrace the spring, but all too often, the promise of better days to come is snatched away by a reminder of how fragile the emerging new season seems to be. At some point, both nature and the universe have to draw the line. Before that happens, we find ourselves saying ‘goodbye’ one moment and ‘hello’ the next – and as the days grow longer, we can no longer ignore the march of time. As far as I’m concerned, the New Moon in Pisces closes off the winter for good.
It’s also the moment for me to say a personal goodbye. Dealing with loss is closure in another form – and it’s appropriate that this particular goodbye is taking place shortly after the New Moon. My aunt passed away – at a venerable age – and we will mourn the closure of her life. She leaves behind, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – and as her life ends, the lives of her youngest descendants hold all the promise of spring: their lives will blossom thanks to the love and care she passed down the generations. Life – as ever – moves on – and Pisces knows that more than most.
New Moon in Pisces: The Background Noise
On February 28th at 00:44 (UT), the New Moon in Pisces will be found at 9˚ 40′ of that sign. A New Moon signifies the transition from the old to the new. It marks the moment when we look ahead to the things yet to come. Sometimes we plant those seeds with good intentions, sometimes the seeds fall on the ground and sprout regardless of whether we planted them or not. Any gardener knows that the strongest seedlings are often those of ‘accidental’ plants or unwelcome garden visitors – though occasionally, nature provides us with a welcome surprise.
The surprise that accompanies this New Moon in Pisces may be seen in the heavens above. As you will see in the chart below, the planets are aligned in a great arc across the heavens, and this is now visible in the night sky. This is known as a ‘bowl’ configuration is astrology, with all the planets in one hemisphere of the chart. It holds an important message: it’s one sided, things are out of kilter, there is something missing, it’s dependent, demanding, possessive and incomplete. When its found in a natal chart, There is often a determination to ‘fill the void’, and a wish to do something ‘big’ in the world. To be noticed, To blaze a trail.
It may not come as a surprise to you to learn that Donald Trump has this configuration in his birth chart. Like the US President, New Moons have the capacity to affect everyone. They may affect you personally if they fall on a planet or point in your natal (or a predictive) chart, but in an impersonal sense, those big issues signified by the New Moon in Pisces – one sided demands, dependency, a singular focus on your own core values, a desire for whatever it is you lack – those themes will play out on the global stage too. The question is how?
The nature of a bowl configuration is determined by its leading planets – and the planets that are found on the rim of this bowl are our old friends, Mars and Pluto. Mars and Pluto are locked in a tempestuous embrace, thanks to the Mars’s long retrograde period that began in October 2024. The Mars – Pluto opposition has been a major astrological influence since it became exact on November 5th 2024 (the date of the US Election) and that opposition – though not in orb at the time of this new Moon in Pisces – becomes exact once more on April 27th 2025. Circle that date in your diary.

New Moon in Pisces: What Do The Aspects Tell Us?
So, the New Moon in Pisces is rolling around the bottom of the Mars – Pluto bowl with all the other planets. It’s like having all your eggs in one basket – except this basket is not necessarily the best place to be. I wouldn’t entrust my eggs (of any kind!) to Mars and Pluto. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, and when planets gather in this sign it’s a signal that something is over. When relationships or life situations end, they make a space – a void – waiting to be filled with new relationships and new beginnings.
What are those new beginnings likely to be and how will they occur? The New Moon makes two significant aspects that may shed light on this:
- New Moon trine Mars in Cancer.
- New Moon square Jupiter in Gemini.
First, the New Moon trine Mars in Cancer tells us that tribalism is likely to be easily aroused. Mars in Cancer is also the passive aggressive placement. Tantrums, spite and resentment are part of the Mars in Cancer mix, and as Mars is now direct in this sign, this emotional volatility is likely to become more pronounced as the effects of the lunation unfold. Whatever change is about to occur – personal or otherwise – it’s not going to be pleasant or easy to live with. Expect a few eggs to become cracked or broken.
By the the time of the direct Mars – Pluto opposition in April. Mars will have re-entered Leo, the sign of the King, and the events that began with the retrograde Mars – Pluto opposition on November 5th 2024 will be set in place. Something new will ‘fill the void’. And that ‘something’ will align with the impact of Pluto in Aquarius. New situation will hatch in the crucible of the Mars – Pluto bowl, so they are going to be transactional, volatile, difficult, dark and dangerous. The New Moon in Pisces tells us we have to go with that flow. There is no other choice.
Second, the square aspect from this New Moon to Jupiter in Gemini is going to force people to examine and articulate their beliefs. It’s going to force us to put issues like trade and exchanges (of all kinds) into a moral perspective. All of this is happening under this Pisces New Moon and the Mars – Pluto influence. Don’t forget that those two planets symbolize bullying and manipulation; that’s the container in which we find this lunation. Yet, there is also a great deal of resilience in this New Moon in Pisces – even if it’s invisible at present. It’s being seeded – and it will grow.
New Moon in Pisces: Conclusion
In a volatile world, this new Moon in Pisces signals new allegiances, new alliances, new and difficult circumstances and considerable levels of uncertainty. To those of you affected by the new Moon in Pisces at a personal level, themes of radical change, shifting allegiances, bullying, pressure, single mindedness, closure, uncertainty, and the sense that things are not as you were led to believe, will emerge in the wake of the New Moon. It will mark the end of something in your life, but it will also open the space for something new to grow.
A final point: you and I can’t control global events, but we have to live in their shadow. With this New Moon in Pisces, you may feel as if you’re a vulnerable egg rattling around in the dangerous Mars – Pluto bowl, but that experience is going to force you to think about what is really happening – and what the future holds for you. The problem is, we are in a new space and the answer to that question is – as yet – a complete unknown. The New Moon in Pisces suggests intuition may be useful in the weeks and months ahead. Go with the flow before you decide to swim against the tide.
