The Moon in astrology represents your soul. I realise that’s a big ask of any satellite, however, as we look at the symbolism of our nearest neighbour in space, I hope things will become as clear as the skies on a cold moonlit night.

The Moon governs your emotional responses, your sense of security, the things that make you comfortable. Getting to know your Moon is a great way of upping your levels of emotional intelligence. However, as the Moon is unconscious and instinctive, it’s not always easy to bring your deepest emotions and needs to light, especially as the Moon has a dark side. Repressed emotions and feelings are often hard to deal with.

A great way to use your Moon wisely is to understand that its sign tells you how to best process your responses to the world around you. Being comfortable with life and emotionally balanced is always preferable to hiding difficult feelings, or being governed by unconscious habits or emotional trauma.

Aries Moon

An Aries moon makes you emotionally volatile, excitable and surprisingly easily wounded. Your temperament is ‘temperamental’ in the most basic sense. You may be overly defensive, with attack your preferred form of defence; when you feel threatened you shoot first. You take things personally, often lashing out at when you’re fired up. You can’t disguise your emotional responses and you may become headstrong or childish if emotionally challenged.

You wear your heart on your sleeve. You’re emotionally direct, and you see things in black and white. You can’t understand emotional complexity. For you, emotions may be simple but they are felt intensely and with great immediacy. You’re often impulsive as you act on your feelings. Try to channel your needs positively: you need an active outlet for your feelings, you need passion – and you need something worth fighting for.

Taurus Moon

The Moon represents your deepest needs; with a Taurus moon, you need security. You need stability and certainty. You need those qualities in your family, your relationships and living situation and you cater to those needs by taking care of yourself physically and materially. It’s okay to indulge yourself once in a while, but with a Taurus Moon, you may overeat or overspend if you’re feeling low. When you’re content, you are the most generous and warm-hearted person. People feel safe and secure around you because you reflect that energy back to them.

While this seems laudable, remember the Moon is passive – and while you need stability, trust, creativity and calm at a deep emotional level, you may have to work hard at achieving emotional satisfaction. You hold on to bad habits or emotional hang-ups, because you’re temperamentally inflexible. This is can be an issue for you, because if you can’t satisfy your emotional needs you may feel as though your world is falling apart. More than anyone, you need to keep emotionally grounded and aware of your basic physical needs in order to release those attachments that are dragging you down.

Gemini Moon

The Moon represents your comfort zone. It’s the place you go to switch off and relax – but this may be difficult for you if your Moon is in Gemini. You need stimulation – especially mental stimulation – and lots of it. You need to be busy, have projects, hobbies, interests and good company. You are uncomfortable on your own and can turn in on yourself. You have a naturally nervous disposition and you worry more than most people. Your feelings are changeable; it’s often hard for you to know how you feel..

Gemini Moon people often have a hard time with emotional depth. You need to engage mentally to become emotionally invested, so it’s important for you to process at the emotional level. Introspection may be fashionable, but try to avoid overthinking. Learn to keep your thoughts focused. Try to keep your mind quiet. Cultivate an inner dialogue. Learn to accept words of comfort that others may give to you – and use your facility with language to comfort others too.

Cancer Moon

Cancer is an emotionally possessive Moon sign. You hold fast to whatever makes you feel secure. You need a comfortable home, a close knit family, children and a shared history. A sense of belonging is essential to your emotional wellbeing. You’re sensitive, intuitive and easily hurt. Cooking or walking by the sea may be important to your emotional wellbeing. You may have a deep need to care for people or artefacts – especially historical artefacts or antiques. You may collect items of sentimental value, but beware of hoarding both material and emotional junk.

Your emotions are entwined with your possessions and you may feel they are too precious to part with. Everything seems to have some sentimental value to you. You are often possessive in a personal and material sense. Learn to let go of both people and objects. Inner security will nurture you far more effectively. You may have a keen interest in your family history, or the history of the place your family came from. That’s a positive way to touch base with yourself, as it helps you to affirm your sense of belonging.

Leo Moon

With the Moon in Leo, you need Leonine people and situations in your life. For you this presents you with a conundrum – you are a child of the Sun and you need to shine to feel good about yourself, but the Moon reflects light; it has no light source of its own. So you’re often drawn towards people and places that will feed that need. You need attention and drama in your life, but deep down, you’re most comfortable in situations that enable you to be playful and creative, and where your feelings are treated with the respect they deserve.

You also have a strong sense of dignity – which is just as well as your ego may be easily damaged. It’s easy for you to flare up in response to some slight – real or imagined – and cause an emotional scene. Your responses can be theatrical. Once the scene is over your usual happy demeanour returns quickly, but your audience may be left thinking, ‘What the heck just happened there?’ Try to avoid being pompous or overbearing if things aren’t going your way. You may appear childish or entitled – and neither of those is a good look.

Virgo Moon

The Moon in your natal chart represents your comfort zone, the place you go to chill out and relax. Except the Virgo Moon doesn’t really relax, as you need to feel useful and productive. For people with a Virgo Moon, relaxation is hard work; you hate to be underemployed and you regard keeping busy as being better than a holiday. When you do take holidays they need to be meticulously planned with a very full itinerary. And take some antacid and meds with you. Your comfort zone should feel safe and healthy – dirt and disorder are anathema to you. More than anyone, you find comfort in cleanliness and routine.

You have an instinctive and deep need to analyse everything around you; words, objects, situations and people. That can be a great talent, but don’t let your knack for problematising everything turn into a problem for you. You can become hypercritical if you feel emotionally threatened or misunderstood. Over-sensitivity is common with this moon sign. However, that eye for detail – which is so instinctive in you – means you notice the little things that others often miss. At best, this moon sign has the gift of emotional intelligence – so use it well.

Libra Moon

The Moon represents your comfort zone; there is nothing like an appointment with your hairdresser to keep you feeling that all is well with your world. If that sounds sexist, let me tell you that lunar Libra guys are just as keen on looking good. That bijou salon where you go to keep your facial hair in good shape? That’s so Libra Moon. As is the gym – looking toned is probably higher up the scale of your objectives than merely keeping fit. For the less active, art classes or galleries will do just as well. Your need for aesthetic appeal goes beyond the strictly personal.

You need relaxation and beautiful or elegant surroundings like you need oxygen, with a Libra Moon you need loads of that too. Lunar Libra subjects love long walks, cycling and fresh air – whether it’s the coast or the country it doesn’t matter. What does matter is the sense of emotional harmony that comes from being in your element. You won’t be going it alone, however, as you need people too. Sharing your pursuits with others is, for you, the greatest need of all.

Scorpio Moon

The Moon represents our comfort zone; It’s where we we feel most safe and secure. So, is lunar Scorpio comfortable with intense or extreme emotionalism? For most of us – including many Scorpio Moon subjects – that would feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, Scorpio lunar energy is often focused on emotional control; there is little emotion visible on the surface. However, you need emotional intensity: sex, relationships, food, your domestic life, your relationship with your mother – lunar issues are marked by an ‘all or nothing’, passionate, tempestuous or possessive attitude – and that’s okay with you.

That emotional scenario may feel like the antithesis of chilled, but it’s what you need. However, emotional intensity does not make your inner life a soap opera. At home, you prefer things to be done your way, but your real preference is for your private life to be the way you prefer it to be. Your tastes in all things may be extreme, from home decor to the food you eat. You can be emotionally demanding and uncompromising. You love more deeply and passionately than most people. Especially your dog. And when times are tough? You step up to the plate.

Sagittarius Moon

The Moon represents your comfort zone; it’s where you go to to relax or feel safe. However, Sagittarius Moon’s idea of comfort, safety and relaxation would make most other signs hair stand on end. Your comfort zone is never where you are now; it’s an adventure that takes you far away. At the more restrained end of the scale, you find comfort in a good book, preferably one that takes your mind to foreign shores, or the outer galaxy, or any subject that adds to your already formidable store of knowledge. You may even migrate overseas to satisfy your need for risk and adventure.

You prefer to spend your downtime outside, and you need to be physically active. Your day is rarely complete without sport of some kind – even if it’s viewed from your armchair – and you’re not averse to betting on the outcome. Vacations also need to to be active – you’re a traveller not a tourist – and you need authentic experiences in the places you visit, preferably on horseback, camelback or elephant back. If you take to water, canoeing or kayaking will float your boat. Without adventure you’re surprisingly easy to trigger, so please stay active for everyone’s sake – including your own.

Capricorn Moon

The Moon represents our comfort zone, but with a Capricorn moon your notion of comfort may seem challenging to some. Capricorn Moon subjects find comfort in hard work; you need to be working towards something all of the time. Downtime as most people understand it may be anathema to you – unless it’s work related. The term ‘Corporate Hospitality’ seems to have been invented for Capricorn, as it encapsulates that Saturn/Moon combination – hospitality and leisure with a purpose. You never waste your efforts – or your time.

Your Capricorn Moon gives you a deep need to conserve, build and achieve – and this is true even if your Sun Sign gives you a completely different basic character. Don’t be surprised if this Moon Sign draws you towards practical hobbies or projects, or leads you to volunteer for worthy causes – especially if you can manage or lead such worthwhile efforts. You don’t really do ‘unproductive’, so ensuring your time is well spent is what you do to relax and feel at one with yourself. Don’t feel bad about it. You feel best when your efforts are acknowledged and appreciated.

Aquarius Moon

The Moon represents our comfort zone and the things that keep us content. It’s our emotional centre and there lies the rub if you have the Moon in Aquarius. Aquarius Moons are not that emotional and express their emotions in an intellectual way. This is completely normal for an Aquarius Moon – they hate emotional display and are far more comfortable with considered intellectual responses rather than an emotional outbursts. It’s not that Aquarius doesn’t feel things – they do. They just process it differently – and that’s fine by them.

So in your life you have a need for Aquarian things. Once the world has come to terms with your lack of emotional display, you can concentrate on acquiring tech gadgets, spending hours on line, indulging in singular but meaningful hobbies, and developing your interest in social issues – and your social life too. These are the things you gravitate to quite naturally. For you, Aquarius, having a social life is more than just party time. It usually involves you being part of a collection of like minded souls who perhaps find more connections with strangers who share their particular interests than they do with their own flesh and blood.

Pisces Moon

The Moon represents our comfort zone and with your Moon in Pisces, your comfort zone is filled with wind chimes, bells, paintings, waifs, strays, candles and whatever spiritual ephemera you feel instinctively drawn towards – whether its a colour (your aura) as symbol (a mandala) or a vast music collection that takes you to another place. Quite simply, your comfort zone is where you go to escape the world. You may do yoga at home and make your surroundings a shrine to your spiritual needs. Alternatively you may long to escape from all home and family represents – or decide to live by the sea.

However you express your Pisces Moon, you will, in your life, have a need for all things associated with Pisces. Either directly or through your relationships, you will drawn towards the esoteric and intangible. A lack of certainty doesn’t worry you nearly as much as it would worry other signs and your capacity for acceptance and going with the flow is simply how you habitually respond to the vagaries of life. For an emotional sign you tend not to hold onto your feelings but find it easy to accept and express them – often creatively. However, it’s fair to say that many of you seek emotional escape – and often that’s not so healthy for you at all.
