This week’s lunar eclipse in Virgo means the first eclipse season of the year is here. It comes at a busy time astrologically – and don’t we know it. Venus turned retrograde in Aries at the beginning of the month. The financial impact of that retrograde motion is setting fire to headlines globally. The relational impact is also gaining attention everywhere. That trend will continue. Mercury in Aries is about to turn retrograde. This will occur only a day after the lunar eclipse in Virgo. At the end of the month, Neptune makes ingress into Aries and there is also solar eclipse in that sign.

There is a real ‘endings and beginnings’ feel to the world at the moment. We are in that strange transitional space (Sun in Pisces). We sense that everything is changing. However, we don’t know how the new situation is going to unfold. Astrologically, that’s no surprise. The planets presently in the last sign of the zodiac will soon change signs. Until that occurs, we are having to deal with things reaching the end of the line. They are also reaching the end of their usefulness. In this post, I’m going to look at how the lunar eclipse in Virgo contributes to that process.

Lunar Eclipse in Virgo: The Essentials

In a month where impulsive, aggressive and brutal Aries is so dominant, we feel overwhelmed. Our heads are spinning due to retrograde planetary action in that sign. A lunar eclipse in Virgo may come as a moment of resignation. Lunar eclipses signify culmination – and that’s completion under another name. In Virgo, that involves tying up loose ends. It requires reconsidering plans. It means being pragmatic and realistic in the face of a crisis. Crisis? What crisis? This lunar eclipse is the second eclipse in the Virgo – Pisces eclipse cycle that began last September. Picking your way (Virgo) through chaos (Pisces) will be second nature by the time that cycle ends in 2027.

I referred to a ‘crisis’, because lunar eclipses are – by their nature – indicative of opposition. They represent adversarial situations, contests, competition and situations coming to a head. With a lunar eclipse in Virgo the Moon reflects the light of a chaotic Pisces Sun. It’s easy to criticize or be self-critical. As this is also a south node eclipse, you may be asking yourself what could have been done. We collectively may wonder how to deal with a crisis. South node lunar eclipses often push you out of your comfort zone. Keep this in mind with this lunar eclipse in Virgo.

Could you/we have handled things better? You may be trying hard to make sense of a lot of things that simply don’t make sense. Virgo is the opposite of crazy Pisces. ‘Crazy’ may trigger you. That and things that make no sense can be problematic. You may not understand how things work. They might not be working out as you thought. The lunar eclipse is going to bring events that underscore that position. So, what happens next? You need to let go of things that are not working out for you. Stop trying to make sense of nonsense. There are some fairly basic lessons to be learned with a lunar eclipse in Virgo.

The retrograde planets are going to add to the effects of the lunar eclipse. Venus retrograde in Aries is going to make you question the things you want, love and value. You may be uncomfortable with your material choices or personal values. Sometimes, things cost more than we are willing to pay. Mercury retrograde in Aries signifies difficult discussions (and arguments) during the retrograde period. You may be having those arguments with yourself – if you’re lucky . This is not going to be an easy time for relationships of any kind.

If you have planets or points in your chart close to 23˚-24˚ Virgo (or Pisces), expect a cosmic intervention . Check the house positions of the eclipse axis to see where the impact is going to be felt. Even if the eclipse degree doesn’t feature in your natal chart, check out your solar return chart (just in case). Note the position lunar eclipse’s hose position. You may have some clearing up to do in the house in which the eclipse falls. Plans may not work out as you hoped they would. In fact, plans may not work out at all.

Lunar Eclipse in Virgo: Chart Analysis

Every eclipse has its own chart. The nature of this chart tells us the major themes. In this case, the chart shows the following:

  • The lunar eclipse forming an ‘easy opposition’, with a trine to Uranus in Taurus.
  • The lunar eclipse, is op[posed by the Sun, Saturn and Neptune in conjunction in Pisces.

The lunar eclipse in Virgo is trine Uranus in Taurus. Uranus is not an easy planet, even though the trine is an easy aspect. ‘Easy’ – in this context – simply refers to the passive nature. It reflects the trine aspect from the lunar eclipse to Uranus. In predictive astrology, trine aspects signify events happening at speed, and Uranus implies speed and surprise. So, can we expect the unexpected to happen fast? Yes we can. Uranus is also renowned for chaos and revolution; watch that space at the time of the lunar eclipse in Virgo.

As I mentioned above, the lunar eclipse is opposed by the Sun, Saturn and Neptune, conjunct in Pisces. Saturn and Neptune are difficult planets. They represent order (Saturn) and confusion (Neptune). As you can see (again) the tension between stability and madness is a major theme of this lunar eclipse. In astrology, Saturn represents the established way of doing things. Tradition, authority, and playing by the rules are found in Saturn’s domain. But how stable is Saturn in Pisces?

Currently, Saturn’s penchant for a rules based order is being undermined by its location in Pisces, Neptune’s domain. Saturn is in an approaching wide conjunction with Neptune. It is strong in its own sign, though the contact will not be exact until both planets are in Aries. Neptune in Pisces has been the agent of chaos in recent years. That’s drawing to a close. Any planet on an anaretic degree (29˚) is a big player. This is especially true when it’s that sign’s ruling planet. As you can see from the chart, that’s where we are with Neptune in Pisces. Expect Saturn’s rules, tradition and authority to vanish into the mist.

The rules are upset. Order is thrown into chaos. Plans need to be reconsidered. Because it’s a lunar eclipse, there is no way back. The events linked to this lunar eclipse in Virgo signify something irreversible. That’s how lunar eclipses work. Whatever occurs is final – and if that’s a major shock to the system, don’t be surprised. Lunar eclipses often bring high impact events that trigger the need for a re-set. This lunar eclipse suggests taking the sensible and practical course. It may be the best way forwards. Use this time to draw the line before starting anything new.
