The New Moon in Aquarius will plant some seeds, so the question is, how will they grow? This morning’s news in the UK, sees a lot of seeds being planted. Our Chancellor of the Exchequer (UK finance minister) has announced a raft of major public projects designed to stimulate growth – and that’s great timing on the day of a New Moon in Aquarius. Aquarius is an air sign: it’s forward thinking, connective, progressive and experimental – and a lot of what the Chancellor had to say concerned airport expansion, tech investments, major new transport initiatives – and upgrading the nation’s water supply.

Aquarius is the sign of the water carrier and – as you know – water is essential to life. It’s one of those fabulous astrological coincidences (i.e. not a coincidence at all) that the way forward is seen to be deeply connected to water provision. However, it’s been that way since the dawn of time. The New Moon in Aquarius may remind us that nothing is new under the sun, and no matter how big your plans, if there’s no water (even of the symbolic kind) they are likely to wither and die. So, at the time of this New Moon in Aquarius, plant your seeds deep – and water them well.

New Moon in Aquarius: The Essentials

The New Moon manifests on 29th January at 9˚51′ Aquarius, at 12:35pm (UT). As I mentioned above, this represents a seeding time – not just in the public realm (though Aquarius is tuned into society in a big way), but in the lives of those of you who are touched by this New Moon because you have planets or points in your natal chart in orb to this lunation. If that person is you (and, by the way, it’s also me) I would keep your orbs fairly tight: 5˚-6˚ may seem overly generous to some astrologers, but I think it’s as far as you need to go.

All of the symbolism of this quirky sign is in play at the time of the New Moon in Aquarius: it’s unconventional, revolutionary, future oriented, intellectual, progressive, innovative and inventive. So far that aligns with everything I have read about the day’s events since I opened my eyes this morning. However, Aquarius is also chaotic, erratic and extreme. It’s perverse, reactionary and fanatical – with a tendency towards being unpredictable, inflexible and dictatorial. Will today’s seeds bear fruit or thorns? Only time will tell.

Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, so the association with shocks and surprises and things not going entirely as expected is always going to be part of the Aquarius package. Seeds planted now may not grow as expected. This is the new moon that has ‘unintended consequences’ written over it, so whatever you start now may have some unexpected repercussions. That’s no reason not to start something around this time; the New Moon in Aquarius is the sign of bright ideas, so the things that spin off somewhere down the line may benefit you – particularly around the time of the full moon in this sign in six months time.

New Moon in Aquarius: The Aspects

The new moon in Aquarius makes the following aspects:

  • New Moon conjunct the Mercury – Pluto conjunction in Aquarius, making a powerful stellium in that sign.
  • New Moon trine Jupiter retrograde in Gemini.
  • Background noise: Pluto sextile Venus – Neptune (and north node) conjunction in Pisces.

I’m going to break with my usual practice of analyzing lunations on an ‘aspect by aspect’ basis; instead, I’m going to jump in and give you an overall summary of the impact of this new moon in Aquarius. With this sign, why not try something new?

New Moon in Aquarius: The Summary

With a New Moon in Aquarius conjunction Mercury and Pluto, it’s no surprise that the news has been filled with big announcements (that trine to Jupiter in Gemini) about making investments, looking to the future, and developing technological solutions. That’s been the focus in the UK and the other big story elsewhere has been the emergence of ‘Deepseek’, the new AI app from China which has stirred some controversy with Open AI and ChatGPT. That one has the potential to turn the tech industry on its head – and no doubt that will play put in the coming months, but is it representative of this lunation?

The answer is (drum roll…) yes. The New Moon in Aquarius (tech) conjunct Mercury and Pluto and trine Jupiter has ‘Deep’ (Pluto) and ‘seek’ (Mercury, Jupiter) as the most literal of meanings. That’s how it has manifested on the surface, but dig down and what do we have? The start of a process of transformation in the way we communicate and inform (that’s what AI is doing) but also in the way that AI apps are developed and – more importantly – there is the issue of who controls that information. Watch out for developments with this story in the months to come.

At a personal level we need to go deeper still; a new Moon in Aquarius conjunct Mercury and Pluto and trine Jupiter reminds all of us that it’s time to start thinking about the future in a personal sense. To make the best of your opportunities (Jupiter) you need to invest in yourself (Pluto). In the wake of this New Moon in Aquarius that process is going to work best if you take a few risks (Aquarius). Don’t be constrained by negative or outdated beliefs (Jupiter). Draw a line under the past (Pluto) and don’t be afraid to ‘brainstorm’ your way forwards.

AI tells me that ‘brainstorming’ involves an ‘intensive, freewheeling discussion’, and that’s about as good a description of the dynamics of this New Moon in Aquarius as you are going to get. That’s the way forward – and if this lunation makes contact with planets and points in your natal chart, expect that dynamic to manifest in your life about now. Or it may have done so already as Uranus ruled Aquarius likes to be ahead of the curve. If you can get ahead of the field – in some way – in a few months time you may be glad that you did. It’s time to make an intelligent move and transform your life.
