Introduction

I thought it would be a good Idea to prepare a solar return chart for Joe Biden – particularly as he has just turned 81. This makes him the oldest sitting president in the history of the US – and if he’s returned in November 2024, he will be 82 by the time Inauguration Day rolls around. With the best will in the world, that is an advanced age to be taking on the role of Chief of the world’s most powerful country.

Let me state at the outset: I’m not a US citizen (I live in the UK) but I feel that we all have some skin in the game where the US presidency is concerned. The US president (whoever that may be) is the most influential and powerful politician in the world. As the old saying goes, ‘When America sneezes, the world catches a cold’. So, will the US re-elect Joe Biden? Or the Republican nominee? Or will there be some curve ball thrown from left of field? Elections are not over until the last vote has been counted – and there is a long way to go before that happens.

One way of ‘reading the runes’ may be to look at Joe Biden’s solar return chart for 2023-2024. It’s an exercise I did with Donald Trump in 2020. and I’ll be referring to that reading in due course, as there is one striking similarity they have in common. Please note, this is a brief analysis of what I think will be the major talking points over the next year and, though it leaves the central question unresolved, Joe Biden’s solar return chart does point towards the major themes that may unfold in his life during the next twelve months.

Joe Biden: His Solar Return Chart

I’ve printed Joe Biden’s solar return chart from Astro.com and I’ve used Washington DC as the location, as we know Joe Biden was there on his birthday. I’ve used the Topocentric house system, as It’s one I use regularly. One thing to note: Joe Biden’s birth date is November 20th and this means he will have a new solar return chart applying shortly after the US presidential election day. This chart certainly describes the next twelve months of his life, but we may need to look at the following year’s solar return chart to get a better picture of what’s in store for November 2024 – and January 2025.

Joe Biden: Solar Return Chart 2023 1

My first impressions of the chart – in no particular order – are as follows:

  • Solar Return Ascendant in Leo
  • Fixed Grand Cross aspect pattern includes Sun, Moon & Ascendant
  • Uranus in tenth house, wide conjunction to Midheaven
  • Sun – Mars conjunction in fourth house
  • Moon – Saturn disassociate wide conjunction in seventh house
  • Western hemisphere emphasised
  • Most aspects tie into the Sun-Mars conjunction
  • Jupiter retrograde and unaspected

These appear to be the major indicators – though I’ll refer to the remaining factors in my analysis as they arise, particularly in connection with Pluto and Neptune.

Solar Return Chart Analysis

I’m going to begin with the fixed Grand Cross aspect pattern. To have this in your solar return chart, it usually means that things are pretty fixed. You’re going nowhere with this chart – but remember, this chart covers the period before the election. During this solar return year, Joe Biden is secure in his position. This is the aspect pattern of someone who is sticking with the job. It’s the aspect pattern of experience, support and habit. Joe Biden may feel like he is the immovable object during the course of the year – and as the incumbent POTUS, that may be so.

Next, let’s look at the solar return Ascendant in Leo. This is the ascendant sign associated with the ‘King’ – or President – and it simply confirms to us that Joe Biden is the man in charge during this solar return year. It’s a mark of leadership, but it’s also a sign of being in the spotlight; all eyes will be on Joe Biden. As the sitting president that is to be expected. So, we have a few things going on here, the first of which is ‘business as usual’. The other issues may become apparent as I dig into the other placements…

And I’m going to start with the Sun. The Sun is in the solar return fourth house. And when it’s found there, you could argue it’s taken root in the house of home and homeland. That, of course is the current position, as Joe Biden lives in the White House – and will continue to do so in 2024 – regardless of the election result, as the incumbent president stays in position until Inauguration day 2025.

The Sun is closely conjunct Mars. A Sun-Mars conjunction implies that Joe Biden will be fighting hard to maintain his position – and he may have to do so. Mars in the solar return fourth house can be defensive; Biden may be under attack this year, yet he may be energised by having to defend his position. Attacking opponents also be the best form of defence. However, he may be attacked in connection with personal and family matters (fourth house), particularly in connection with things that happened in the past. However, the Sun- Mars conjunction is square the Ascendant and that adds urgency and dynamism to this placement.

There are a lot of aspects connecting with his solar placement; I’ll continue with the next placement in the Grand Cross aspect pattern, the Moon – Saturn conjunction close to the cusp of the seventh house. The Moon and Saturn together often show where you have to get real. It’s a responsible combination – but in the seventh house it’s found in the house of open enemies. As a politician, Joe Biden will have numerous opponents, but one of his most open foes is his age. This is an aspect of longevity – but it also signals a fear of letting go. It’s stable – but it’s also sombre, indicating some emotional difficulties.

Privately, there may be pressure on him to get real about his age – and relinquish his responsibilities by not fighting the election at all. This pressure may come from from the FLOTUS and other family members (seventh to fourth house square) they may be urging him to get real about his age and that may cause tension in his private life. The alternative interpretation is that the FLOTUS (his 7th house partner) is fully behind and supportive of his ambitions – and that is likely to be the one that plays out in public.

However, just when you thought this solar return chart was ‘strong and stable’, up jumps Uranus conjunct the Midheaven – and that has the potential to change the game. Uranus conjunct the Midheaven is an interesting aspect in Joe Biden’s solar return chart because, back in 2020, Donald Trump had the same placement. Uranus on the Midheaven puts instability, revolution and rebellion at the top of the chart. Given what happened on January 6th 2021, the potential for some form of upset or unexpected event is clearly ‘baked in’ to the 2024 election process, and Biden’s life in the next twelve months.

However, this may not indicate rebellion in the way that it happened in January 2021, because of a critical difference in the condition of Uranus in both solar return charts. In Trump’s 2020 solar return chart, Uranus was in forward motion; in Biden’s chart it’s retrograde and that suggests radical change results from an internalised process, rather than from outwardly rebellious public acts – but with Uranus you never know for sure. Only one thing is certain: you can ‘expect the unexpected‘ with Uranus – in a shocking, public and important way.

Finally in Joe Biden’s solar return chart, I want to look at that isolated retrograde Jupiter in the ninth house. Jupiter shows where we want to expand and grab opportunities. Jupiter retrograde shows internalised moments of enlightenment, understanding or realisation. In the ninth house, Jupiter’s own house, this process is likely to be intensified. Jupiter is also un-aspected and this may bring a reversal of some kind – it may be interpreted as a reversal (retrograde) of fortune (Jupiter).

However, This Jupiter placement could also boost religious faith, over-optimism and involvement in international affairs. Jupiter’s effects will, however, appear detached from the main thrust of the solar return chart. It may be that Joe Biden enjoys more success in international affairs than he does in domestic politics. Again there are multiple ways in which this can be interpreted in the context of the 2024 US presidential election.

Joe Biden: Expect the Unexpected

To recap; for Joe Biden it’s going to be an ‘apparently’ stable year. Business as usual – yet expect the unexpected. What could happen? Here are a couple of suggestions: if Joe Biden is expected to win the 2024 election, he may not. The opposite may also be true – but the thing that springs a surprise on Joe Biden (and the rest of us) is, perhaps, more personal to him. This is, after all his solar return chart – not that of the USA. So, let’s look again at the dominant aspects.

The Sun-Mars conjunction in the fourth house is opposed by Uranus in the 10th house. Some possible interpretations are as follows:

  • Defending the homeland (fourth house) from revolution and insurgency (tenth house).
  • A sudden career change (Uranus, Midheaven) causes private anguish.
  • Personal matters cause a sudden change in priorities.

And the worst case scenario? A sudden (Uranus) health event like a heart attack – not unknown with the Sun (heart) conjunct Mars (attack) in the house of ‘beginnings and endings’ – causes a sudden unexpected change at the top (Uranus conjunct Midheaven). Remember this opposition is also squared by the Moon -Saturn conjunction in the seventh. It’s the widow’s placement. And it’s connected to some potentially difficult Neptune and Pluto placements. However, I’m also certain that POTUS will have the best health care available. I’m just putting it out there…

None of the above possibilities are mutually exclusive. In fact, some or all of them could be in play. The Sun-Mars conjunction trines Neptune in the eighth house of Biden’s solar return chart and Neptune is in a sextile aspect to Uranus (sudden change)and the Midheaven (career). Neptune here is a sign of having to let go, as the eighth is the ‘no turning back’ house. Neptune also represents confusion and forgetfulness, and when they are contained in the eighth house, that’s also cause for concern in someone of Joe Biden’s age. Neptune undermines – and that may be something to bear in mind.

In addition to that, midway between the Sun-Mars conjunction and Neptune in the eighth house, lies Pluto in the sixth house. The sextiles to Pluto (from Sun-Mars and Neptune) bring ‘profound change’ in the house of health into the equation. And that’s also a concern at Biden’s age. Here we have a minor trine allowing certain energies to be released with ease. Mars and Pluto are not benevolent planets; Biden may be under attack from his own health – particularly hidden or undiagnosed underlying issues. It could be that, during this solar return year, health reasons – as yet unknown – force POTUS 46 from contesting the 2024 election.

Will Joe Biden Win in 2024?

Whatever happens, I suspect things will not unfold the way we expect them to – and that could be for a multitude of reasons. Will Joe Biden win (or even contest) the next US presidential election? If he does not contest the election, I feel it’s most likely to be for health reasons. The other big question arises: does that signal a victory for Donald Trump? I haven’t yet had the opportunity to fully analyse his 2024 solar return chart – but I will do so closer to his solar return date and post my analysis at that time.

However, a quick glance at Donald Trump’s 2024 solar return chart (out of curiosity) reveals the presence of Saturn, the Lord of Karma, sitting on the Midheaven. Karma is not necessarily ‘code’ for victory, so it looks like we will have to wait and see. I suspect somewhere ‘left of field’ is where we could be twelve months from now. The new POTUS may not be Biden, but it may not be Trump either. On that note, I’m going to finish with that famous quote from another Donald, Donald Rumsfeld:

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

Donald Rumsfeld

Right now, it looks as if the USA may be in the territory of the ‘unknown unknowns’.
