Kamala Harris: Introduction
Kamala Harris is the current Vice President of the USA and the Democrat’s candidate for President in the election that will take place on November 5th. But you know that already. I’m not an American, so I find it amazing that US elections take so long to resolve. Here in the UK, elections are done in a few weeks and the government changes overnight, so this year long process (and then some…) seems extraordinary. However, one benefit to the astrology community, is that it gives us time to look at the candidates in depth and assess their chances in the forthcoming contest.
When the US election process began, the candidates were Joe Biden (the sitting President, POTUS 46)) and Donald Trump (POTUS 45), the oldest candidates in US election history, and I prepared solar return charts for both of them. When I prepared Joe Biden’s chart in November 2023, I forecast a sudden change that meant he would step down from the race – and that’s how things turned out. When I did Donald Trump’s chart in June 2024, I felt the signs of an election win were inconclusive. I saw nothing in his chart to change my mind from the prediction I made in November 2023:
“The new POTUS may not be Biden, but it may not be Trump either“
Sara Shipman, November 2023.
Events have moved on, Kamala Harris is the candidate – and she turned a comparatively youthful 60 on Sunday October 20th. The candidates are in full campaign mode with the election being so close, and VP Harris was campaigning in Georgia on the day of her solar return. I have cast her solar return chart based on that information and location, specifically Jonesboro GA, as her attendance at church services there is well documented. I have used the topocentric system of houses, which I used it for both Biden’s and Trump’s charts.
Kamala Harris: Her Solar Return Chart for 2024

So, what are my impressions of Kamala Harris’s 2024 solar return chart? There is a lot to be unpicked – and that’s a reflection of where the skies are at now. The main features are as follows:
- Sun exactly conjunct Midheaven.
- Cardinal t-square with Sun (10th/MC), Pluto (1st) and Mars(7th).
- Pluto opposite Mars now in orb to be effective.
- Yod, ‘finger of fate’ focused on the Sun-MC conjunction, with Saturn (2nd) and Uranus (5th) at the base.
- Sun – MC conjunction trine Jupiter (6th).
- A ‘connecting chain’ of sextiles and minor trines from the 11th to the 7th house.
- Minor trine 1: Pluto (1st) trine Uranus (5th), both sextile Neptune (3rd). This is the rare transiting ‘ mini triangle’ of the outer planets that signifies a major turning point in history. This astrological event happens only 2-3 times a century.
- Minor trine 2: Venus (11th) trine Neptune (3rd), both sextile Pluto (1st).
- Minor trine 2: Mars (7th) trine Neptune (3rd), both sextile Uranus (5th).
Additionally, there are the following aspects:
- Moon (5th) conjunct Jupiter (6th)
- Moon conjunct Jupiter square Saturn (2nd)
- Mercury (10th) trine Saturn (2nd).
- Mercury (10th) inconjunct the Moon (5th) conjunct Jupiter (6th).
- Mars (7th) square Chiron (3rd)
I think that’s everything – but it’s worth noting that the the solar return ascendant is placed in Capricorn – an executive sign. The planets are well spaced throughout the chart – apart from the third quadrant (houses 7-9) with only Mars in that sector. This gives Kamala Harris’s solar return chart a northern hemisphere emphasis (houses 1-6, containing 6 planets, the north node and Chiron) and an eastern house emphasis (houses 10-3, also containing 6 planets – including the Sun – the north node and Chiron).
Kamala Harris: Solar Return Chart Analysis
There is a lot to dig through so, here are the first few pointers, dealing with the underlying orientation of the chart:
- Northern hemisphere emphasis: it’s a subjective year with personal and private life greatly affected. Kamala Harris’s sense of self and sense of belonging will be altered this year.
- Eastern hemisphere emphasis: this is a year for Kamala Harris to show initiative, be assertive and motivated.
- Third quadrant emphasised by its lack: this is not a year for Kamala Harris to make compromises, particularly as Mars is the only planet in this sector.
- Solar Return Ascendant in Capricorn: This is an ambitious, powerful sign of leadership and stability. It shows Kamala Harris will have a dutiful, disciplined, conventional, business-like and responsible approach to the year.
As an astrologer, the big message comes from the condition of the solar return Sun, its house and aspects, so what does Kamala Harris’s solar return chart have to say there?
- Sun conjunction Midheaven: This aspect is exact and marks a landmark year for Kamala Harris. It’s generally regarded as a sign of career success and promotion and recognition or identification with your career role. In an election year, any candidate with this aspect would take it as a positive sign.
Kamala Harris’s Solar Return Chart: The T-square
The Sun is at the apex of two powerful aspect patterns, a dynamic t-square and a yod. I’ll deal with the t-square first:
- Cardinal t-square (10th, 1st, 7th houses): this shows ambition and energy and a determination to get things done. It also contains the potential for crisis and a challenge to Kamala Harris’s personal and professional authority, particularly as the Midheaven is involved. The planets and points involved in this aspect pattern are the Sun and MC, Mars and Pluto.
- Sun-MC conjunction squared by Mars (7th) opposite Pluto (1st): it doesn’t get more tense or dynamic than this combination. It’s ruthless, aggressive, single minded and intense. It’s all or nothing. Kamala Harris will throw everything at achieving her goals this solar return year. It’s a determined combination capable of great achievement. But it’s a challenging and fiercely contested one too.
- Mars and Pluto in opposition are passionate, dangerous, raging and violent and they signify power struggles of an extreme nature. It’s powerful and competitive combination when well used, but it also shows there are powerful forces in opposition. This is a ‘fight to the death’ opposition. Sometimes literally so.
- Pluto in the 1st house shows Kamala Harris will need to be in control this year – or she may literally be in control this year. It’s determined and strong – especially as Pluto is on the anaretic degree (the last degree of Capricorn) and it shows she may need to be ruthless, especially with Mars in opposition to Pluto.
- Mars in the 7th house: this is the house of open enemies and Mars indicates openly angry, violent, rash, brutal enemies. However, it also shows Kamala Harris will use her energy to forge relationships, as well as take the fight to the opposition.
Kamala Harris’s Solar Return Chart: The Yod
The Sun-Midheaven conjunction is at the apex of a ‘Yod’ configuration, comprising a sextile between Neptune (3rd), Uranus (5th) both with inconjunct (150˚) aspects to the Sun. A Yod is also known as the finger of fate (or finger of God)because it points you towards your destiny or life purpose. As this points directly at the Sun on the MC, it underscores the point made earlier: this is a landmark year for Kamala Harris.
The base of the Yod taps into the energy of the outer planet ‘mini triangle’ (minor trine) that is an important astrological feature in the heavens at the moment. That configuration marks this year as a significant moment in history – and this year, Kamala Harris will have a significant and prominent role in that moment. It’s also worth noting the following points in connection with the Yod:
- Neptune Retrograde 3rd house: Kamala Harris will need to be receptive to information, and she is likely to be made aware of confidential or sensitive information. She must use her intuition and be open minded. She will also need to stay calm.
- Uranus 5th house: Kamala Harris will need to be independently minded and strong willed. She may need to be original and creative when dealing with unpredictable, chaotic, difficult or unusual situations.
The Yod puts you in a new place; it changes the focus. For Kamala Harris, it shows her achievement (if she wins) will represent a move away from lies and misinformation (Neptune, 3rd) and creative chaos (Uranus, 5th).
Kamala Harris’s Solar Return Chart: Other Aspects
The t-square and the yod are the main drivers of Kamala Harris’s solar return chart, but there are other influences that need to be acknowledged:
- Moon (5th) conjunct Jupiter (6th) trine the Sun-Midheaven conjunction: this shows Kamala Harris feels highly confident she can do the job that’s required of her.
- Moon – Jupiter conjunction square Saturn (2nd): following on from the above, the connection to Saturn shows that she takes her responsibilities seriously and is prepared to work hard. It shows patience and discipline are in the mix for her this year.
- Mercury (10th) trine Saturn: this shows Kamala Harris will be making serious and important public statements during the year. Security and stability will be major issues being discussed.
- Moon-Jupiter conjunction inconjunct Mercury: Kamala Harris may be recognised as a confident, competent and able manager – but she will have to be persuasive to convince everyone she’s capable of doing the job.
Kamala Harris’s Solar Return: Conclusion
What I would take from this is as follows: This year, Kamala Harris will be determined to succeed in her objectives – and she may succeed – but she will face potentially violent opposition regardless, and I hate to have to point this out, that may also impact on her personal safety as a public figure. The Sun conjunct MC puts a target on her back because this will be her year in the spotlight. If Kamala Harris does become POTUS 47, it won’t be without a major fight – and considerable opposition.
This year is marks a watershed moment in history – for Kamala Harris personally, this may be a year of great achievement, but it’s also not going to be an easy time. She is going to have to be tough, disciplined and calm to retain focus in what is likely to be a turbulent year. I’m moving towards the ‘million dollar’ question: do I think Kamala Harris will will the November 5th election? Based on this chart, I think the probability is that she will – though it won’t be easy.
I wrote in an earlier post that I thought the process of determining the election result would be traumatic and difficult this year; astrologically, the heavens seem to be backing that up. I’m going to look more deeply into the election prospects of both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in my next post, but – so far – I’ve seen nothing astrologically to make me alter the predictions I made in November (after preparing Joe Biden’s solar return chart) and in June (when I prepared Donald Trump’s solar return chart). The new POTUS will not be Biden, but it may not be Trump either – and that only leaves one alternative.
