As I began to write about this month’s full Moon in Leo, I had a message from one of my sons – the one with the Sun in Leo. Leo is such a warm sign – the Sun is its ruler after all – so I was instantly cheered by a call from a sunny Leo on a cold, wet day in February. Where I live, we suffer from winter clouds that bring endless days and weeks of leaden skies. I feel in need of the Sun, so will the full Moon in Leo do anything to lift my mood and warm my spirits? February can be a tough month mentally and emotionally and lunations tune in to that kind of stress.

The February full Moon in Leo is often called the Snow Moon – and the reason for that will be obvious to many of you reading this, However, it’s also know as the Hungry Moon. At this time of year, our ancestors suffered because their winter food stores were beginning to run out. That’s the literal origin of this name, but astrology tells us that the Moon represents hunger of a different kind – a primeval and instinctive hunger for nourishment at the deep soul level. In this post, I want to focus on how the full Moon in Leo reveals the best way to satisfy that hunger and reconnect you with what you need.

Full Moon in Leo: The Essentials

The full Moon in Leo culminates at 13:53(UT) on February 12th, at 24˚05′ of the big cat’s sign. Leo is a warm and generous energy. When you think of this sign, you think of courage and creativity; dignity and determination; sincerity and a strong will. The full Moon in Leo shines a spotlight on Leo’s qualities, but it’s also going to highlight leonine traits that are less attractive than the ones I’ve listed here. Let’s talk about bombast and bullying; dominance and dogmatism; egotism and pomposity. You don’t get to choose what is (and isn’t) revealed by the full Moon in Leo.

I have – in the past – been accused of belittling this sign (a Leo response there…) by referring to its cat like nature in a playful way, but there’s a serious side to Leo’s feline symbolism. Any cat owner reading this will know that cats are playful up to a point. They dictate the rules and if you overstep the mark they will turn around and bite. It’s a short – and sharp – reminder of who is really in charge. That’s a reasonable analogy of how the full Moon in Leo works; it’ a reminder of when to draw the line, and that’s when it stops being fun.

The full Moon in Leo shows you when enough is enough. And that’s an important message because you don’t have to overdo to get the best out of life. Get back to basics, get in touch with your inner child, rediscover what makes you happy, as those small moments of contentment could be really important to you during a tough month. Cats curl up next to the fire and keep warm for a reason – they know when to hunt, when to play and when to recharge their batteries. Play has a serious purpose; we learn how to handle the world through play acting. This full Moon may remind you of those early life lessons.

Full Moon in Leo: The Chart

Full Moon in Leo: The Aspects

The chart for the full Moon in Leo is a relatively straightforward on, with a dominant t-square aspect pattern at its heart. The most important features are as follows:

  • Full Moon in Leo Square Uranus in Taurus.
  • Full Moon in Leo trine Chiron in Aries.
  • Uranus is part of that infamous outer planet minor trine – effective for the next four years.

When you look at a full moon chart, the first thing you see is the Sun – Moon opposition, and this reminds you that a full Moon is the culmination of a cycle. Six months ago, seeds were sown that will come to fruition at the time of this full Moon in Leo. If you have planets and points in close contact with this lunation, you will experience this personally, but you will always see the themes carried by the full moon played out globally. And with a Leo full Moon, there is always some drama.

Full Moon in Leo: The Story

But what is the story? How is the narrative going to unfold? This is an active, fast-moving story, as told by the strong and dominant t-square aspect pattern, but it’s also tense. Matters are hard to resolve with a t-square, as you try to find solutions – or endure the constant discomfort of events being in constant motion. The status quo is never an option with a t-square aspect pattern; it’s restless, but it also results in anger and frustration – particularly if any of the characters connected by the t-square are volatile in nature.

And that applies here as Uranus, the master of volatility and unpredictability, sits at the apex of the t-square aspect pattern. Uranus, mad genius and ‘disruptor in chief’, is the key to how the story reaches its conclusion. However, there is another central player in this – Chiron, the wounded healer. Chiron is currently in Aries and when in Aries, Chiron is concerned with anger management, forced competition, division, binary issues, a need to be ‘no.1’, unwelcome comparisons and a refusal to be a team player. The trine from the full Moon to Chiron gives all of those traits an easy outlet.

So, let’s recap: we have a disruptive maverick force as the conduit for childish energy, ego driven drama and self-indulgent conceits. We have an easy outlet for anger, fragile ego issues, competition, isolation and a subconscious need to bully others into submission. Chiron’s sign, Aries, is violent, rash, reckless and threatening. The full Moon’s sign Leo – at its worst – is utterly ego driven, and Uranus in Taurus is there to smash everything to the ground. I suspect that those themes will sound all too familiar…

If you see this drama (Leo) emerge in your own life, a chaotic, ‘out of control’ situation may be about to come to a head. Someone may be bullying you, or wants something from you regardless of the cost to you. It’s their way or the highway. And does that make you feel mad? Almost certainly, but what the full Moon in Leo is suggesting at this time of stress (a Uranus specialty) is that you deal with the situation creatively. What I mean by that is rather more profound than ‘go and paint a picture’; be original in your responses. If there was ever a time to think and act outside the box, that time is now.

These full Moon in Leo events – large and small, personal and impersonal – are sources of pain that make us feel vulnerable. This full Moon puts uncertainty, disruption, chaos and instability center stage, but if you don’t feel like giving a round of applause, you don’t have to. Chiron is going to prompt you towards insight and wisdom. Take a moment. Be brave, face the bullies down and embrace your own independence and individuality. You may not have the solution to the problem, but you’re not alone. As you sit in that dark auditorium, remember you’re surrounded by fellow brave souls and you are stronger together.
