Planets in Capricorn | Introduction

Planets and points in Capricorn are expressed with serious intent, a trait you will recognise if you have a planet or two in this sign. If your Ascendant or Midheaven falls in Capricorn, you’ll feel the weight of responsibility on your shoulders. Planets and points in Capricorn are influenced by that sign’s energy; they express the functions they represent in the style of Capricorn. The Sun in this sign will not be experienced in the same way as – for example – the Moon, Saturn or the Midheaven (MC) in Capricorn, but the parts of your psyche they represent will also have a touch of Capricorn about them.

So, what do your natal planets and points represent? The personal planets represent parts of your character that are easily recognisable to you; the Sun signifies your inner self and the Moon your emotional side. Mercury represents your mind, Venus your desire nature and Mars your ability to assert yourself. When they express through Capricorn, those areas of your life are experienced with a consistent, conventional and conservative manner. Similarly, the Ascendant and Midheaven will emphasise the traditionally oriented and orderly side of your nature.

The outer planets are less personal in their representation, and Capricorn energy manifests through them in two particular ways: through the ‘social planets’, Jupiter and Saturn, Capricorn energy influences your personal growth and development (Jupiter) and your attitudes towards authority and responsibility (Saturn). Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are the ‘generational planets’; by zodiac sign, they affect everyone born at around the same time. The outer planets passed through this sign in not so long ago; Some of you reading this may have been born with Pluto in Capricorn, or Uranus and Neptune in that sign.

Sun in Capricorn

The Sun represents your sense of identity. With a Capricorn Sun, you are a sensible soul. You’re cautious and know the value of durability. In your life, there is no such thing as a quick fix; your efforts are directed towards long lasting results. You are ambitious and determined to make the best of your life, and you are prepared to work long and hard to get where you want to be. Your natural conservatism ensures no corners are cut – or stone unturned – in your journey through life. Determination and endurance come naturally to you.

If that makes you sound like an unimaginative, yet hard-working, plodder, don’t be fooled by appearances. Your naturally humorous disposition makes light work of hard work and your talent for reliability and solidity is truly appreciated by many whose grip on reality is far more tenuous than yours. You are the one others lean on in a crisis – or otherwise – and your supportive yet sensible and unemotional solutions to life’s problems make you the go to person for practical and trustworthy advice. Natural caution makes you a risk-free zone.

Moon in Capricorn

The Moon represents our comfort zone, but with a Capricorn moon your notion of comfort may seem challenging to some. Capricorn Moon subjects find comfort in hard work; you need to be working towards something all of the time. Downtime as most people understand it may be anathema to you – unless it’s work related. The term ‘Corporate Hospitality’ seems to have been invented for Capricorn, as it encapsulates that Saturn/Moon combination – hospitality and leisure with a purpose. You never waste your efforts – or your time.

Your Capricorn Moon gives you a deep need to conserve, build and achieve – and this is true even if your Sun Sign gives you a completely different basic character. Don’t be surprised if this Moon Sign draws you towards practical hobbies or projects, or leads you to volunteer for worthy causes – especially if you can manage or lead such worthwhile efforts. You don’t really do ‘unproductive’, so ensuring your time is well spent is what you do to relax and feel at one with yourself. Don’t feel bad about it. You feel best when your efforts are acknowledged and appreciated.

Mercury in Capricorn

Mercury in Capricorn is often regarded as pessimistic and taciturn and I’m afraid there is an element of truth in that. You don’t do leaps of faith and you prefer your communications evidence based. Realism is your preferred mode, but this can make you appear downbeat. You’re not overly imaginative, as your objectivity makes you too sensible and controlled for that. Your mind is well-structured and logical; it’s also practical. You’re adept at finding solutions and you have no lack of business acumen, as your mind naturally pushes you in that direction.

Your ability to think strategically and structurally makes you purposeful, and often a high achiever. You have great focus and may become an expert in your chosen field. Mercury in this sign enables you to apply yourself without distraction. It’s a great placement for a business or management specialist, running a department or the local PTA or any profession where your methodical approach makes you a safe pair of hands. You have an ‘air of gravitas’ that is useful in a position of authority. You may speak with authority and you’re mentally able to take responsibility when required.

Venus in Capricorn

This Venus sign loves status and, with this placement, you are prepared to work hard to achieve it. In your relationships you look for quality and commitment. You may be attracted to power and wealth; this is not the most romantic Venus placement. It’s also associated with those who are – how can I say this – more ‘mature’ and you may partner up with a person who is considerably older than you. You are likely to be a traditionalist and you value things that are classic and timeless. This applies to your own sense of style; good tailoring is always going to win over disposable fashion.

Your partner is likely to meet traditional expectations; a solid career and good prospects are always preferable. One reason for this is you’re not comfortable with risk. You prefer the known to the unknown and this applies to your finances too. You’re ambitious with your career plans, but cautious with your spending. You keep your finances under control and you like to save for that rainy day. You’re likely to make long term investments; saving for your pension may have been a financial priority. You’re financially responsible and responsibility is a quality that attracts you.

Mars in Capricorn

Mars in Capricorn is a driven placement, as this is the sign of ambition. This sign harnesses Mars’s energy and enables Mars to function in a manner that is more strategic and sustained. To release energy in a controlled way is of great benefit to those who have this placement, particularly when that drive and ambition are applied to realistic or tangible goals. Career and material ambitions are well favoured with this placement. Your desire to get to the top is unmatched, and your work ethic is likely to leave others exhausted. However, you may drive over other people in that race to the top.

Is it ‘all work and no play’ when you have Mars in Capricorn? You may be conservative with your passions, or passionate about tradition. You may direct your energies towards those activities, objects and people you feel are enduring and responsible. This is not a carefree placement, but it has many advantages: it cools your temper and it makes you reliable as a sexual partner – both in your performance and in your loyalty. You may not be a demonstrative lover, but your intentions are usually honourable, as your aim is to commit. Having high standards has its benefits; you don’t waste your time on unserious people.

Jupiter in Capricorn

Saturn in Capricorn

Uranus in Capricorn

Uranus in Capricorn challenges traditional social structures, so what better way to mark Uranus’s ingress into this sign, than the fall of the Berlin Wall? From 1989 – 1995, Uranus in this sign saw the overthrow of an ideologically-based regime; how appropriate for this planet. Uranus also knocks down walls symbolically, as well as literally. Conservative or outdated social attitudes (Capricorn) are hit by Uranus’s wrecking ball. This placement always marks a time of progressive social and technological change.

The World Wide Web changed everything. The old world, symbolised by Capricorn, was overthrown. The generation born between 1989 and 1995 have known nothing else. They are the internet generation. But what of Uranus’s other revolutionary messages? Independence tore apart at least one empire. The USSR broke apart and the established map of the world  changed, together with the balance of global power. We also began to notice the effects of climate change – and that also triggered a technological and cultural revolution.

Neptune in Capricorn

Neptune was in Capricorn between 1984 and 1998 – and suddenly everyone wanted to be successful. Economically the world appeared to be in a good place, and the dream was to have more, get more and be more. In popular culture, images of glamour and success were everywhere. Film,TV, celebrity magazines (‘Hello!’ magazine was launched in 1988) and paparazzi photographers fed into the public’s apparently insatiable appetite for vicariously living the celebrity lifestyle. The glamour business was born – and it was huge.

The celebrity business needed icons. Designer label clothing, fine jewellery, high end motor marques, celebrity catwalk models, royalty, actors, media moguls and multi-millionaires were became notable public figures. We wanted to be like them, but Neptune’s illusion fades, and the glamour industry eats its own children. Plastic surgery became big business. Successful men were often power-crazed abusers. Credit card debt soared, as lifestyle choices came at a price. They were years of conspicuous consumption and waste – and now we are paying the price.

Pluto in Capricorn

Pluto was in Capricorn between 2008 and 2024. Pluto did a great job of blowing up the world’s economy in 2008 – and so it has continued. This is the placement of plutocracy. During this time, the rich and powerful have become even more so. Extreme wealth – and the gap between the super-rich and the rest of us mere mortals – has grown exponentially. Pluto being Pluto, it doesn’t seem to have gone well: there was also a massive increase in fraud, corruption, abuse of power (financial and sexual) and resources in all forms.

What we have learned is this: Plutocrats will do anything to stay in power. This has been a ‘late-stage capitalism’ placement, with power and wealth are maintained by manipulation, exploitation and greed rather genuine entrepreneurship. The ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ is eating its fill; the book (2007) and the film (2013) captured the spirit of the age. This zeitgeist will have a generational impact in ways we cannot yet comprehend, but one thing is clear: Pluto in this sign has taught us the meaning of unsustainable. It’s existential for all of us. Plutocrats take note: that includes you.

Capricorn Ascendant (AC)

With this ascending sign, you came into this world as a well-behaved and sensible child. You will have been the child your parents didn’t have to worry about; perhaps other siblings were more demanding. Perhaps you were an only child. Maybe you were a late addition to the family and most certainly worth the wait. All of those situations align with this placement. You may have been diligent and dutiful and never late for school, but underneath that orderly exterior you had a streak of mischievous humour and this – together with your natural empathy – made you friendly and popular.

As an adult, you continue to tread the same path, approaching life with discipline, patience, reliability and a sense of humour. Your Capricorn Ascendant gives you an air of authority and can bestow leadership skills, as you naturally display the seriousness of intent that can take you far in many fields. You can be patient and fair – yet uncompromising – as you play by the rules and expect others to do the same. However, you can give the impression that you are so well-contained that you don’t need anyone else. This can be a lonely placement, but mostly it gives you a structured and realistic approach to life.

Capricorn Midheaven (MC)

Your public persona is a serious and hard working one, unsurprisingly, this makes you a person who is respected in your career, as well as in society in general. Many with this MC perform civic duties alongside their primary career; in fact, civic duty may be your main focus in the workplace. A position of trust or responsibility is well suited to your public persona, as is a position of authority. You may also be regarded as a figure of authority in your chosen profession, and being regarded as professional in your dealings is important to you. Capricorn is the sign most associated with ambition; solid achievement is your aim.

How does that translate into your career options? A hardworking and serious attitude benefits all potential career choices, but a Capricorn MC makes your natural aptitudes and attitudes more appropriate to certain occupational sectors: government and public authorities and large corporations provide the structure that you are so comfortable working within, as well as a systematic and steady approach to career progression. You may be oriented towards business and law because of those same underlying principles. This is not the MC associated with instant fame or fortune; you will have to work hard to get where you want to be.
