Planets in Sagittarius | Introduction

Planets and points that fall in Sagittarius are expressed with enthusiasm, a trait you will no doubt recognise if you have a planet or two in this sign. If your Ascendant or Midheaven falls in Sagittarius, seeking adventure will be second nature to you. Planets and points in Sagittarius are influenced by that sign’s energy; they express the functions they represent in a Sagittarian manner. The Sun in this sign will not be experienced in the same way as – for example – the Moon, Saturn or the Midheaven (MC) in Sagittarius, but the parts of your psyche they represent will also have a touch of Sagittarius about them.

So, what do your natal planets and points represent? The personal planets represent parts of your character that are easily recognisable to you; the Sun signifies your inner self and the Moon your emotional side. Mercury represents your mind, Venus your desire nature and Mars your ability to assert yourself. When they express through Sagittarius, those areas of your life are experienced with a bold and expansive manner – as you would expect with this sign. Similarly, the Ascendant and Midheaven will emphasise the spontaneous and freedom loving side of your nature.

The outer planets are less personal in their representation, and Sagittarius energy manifests through them in two particular ways: through the ‘social planets’, Jupiter and Saturn, Sagittarius energy influences your personal growth and development (Jupiter) and your attitudes towards authority and responsibility (Saturn). Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are the ‘generational planets’; by zodiac sign, they affect everyone born at around the same time. The outer planets passed through this sign in not so long ago; Some of you reading this may have been born with Pluto in Sagittarius, or Uranus and Neptune in that sign..

Sun in Sagittarius

The Sun represents your core self, so what is at the heart of Sagittarius? It’s likely that you will be an expansive outgoing archer directing your arrows at any target that catches your eye. Ever the explorer, you can’t bear to be in the same place for more than a moment, so you seek to expand your breadth of experience – and your sphere of influence – as wide as you possibly can. You know no bounds – physically, mentally, spiritually and intellectually. Restlessness is a major feature of this sun sign.

If this makes you sound untamed or untameable, it’s because you – perhaps more than any other sign – follow your desires without fear, or without concern for those less bold than you. You are truly the child of Jove; you want to see the world, and you want to experience all that life can offer – and more. This drive often produces a searching intellect and personal bravery; both of these qualities may take you where others fear to tread. Without you, Sagittarius, the world would be a smaller and more fearful place.

Moon in Sagittarius

The Moon represents your comfort zone; it’s where you go to to relax or feel safe. However, Sagittarius Moon’s idea of comfort, safety and relaxation would make most other signs hair stand on end. Your comfort zone is never where you are now; it’s an adventure that takes you far away. At the more restrained end of the scale, you find comfort in a good book, preferably one that takes your mind to foreign shores, or the outer galaxy, or any subject that adds to your already formidable store of knowledge. You may even migrate overseas to satisfy your need for risk and adventure.

You prefer to spend your downtime outside, and you need to be physically active. Your day is rarely complete without sport of some kind – even if it’s viewed from your armchair – and you’re not averse to betting on the outcome. Vacations also need to to be active – you’re a traveller not a tourist – and you need authentic experiences in the places you visit, preferably on horseback, camelback or elephant back. If you take to water, canoeing or kayaking will float your boat. Without adventure you’re surprisingly easy to trigger, so please stay active for everyone’s sake – including your own.

Mercury in Sagittarius

With Mercury in Sagittarius, you communicate and process information ‘Sagittarius style’. You probably talk a lot. Mercury in Sagittarius is a garrulous Mercury placement and one of the most upbeat. Your communicative style is likely to be light, cheerful and enthusiastic. You’re also truthful to the point of being rude. You ask questions because of your natural need to know and this makes you a keen debater; you like to discuss and argue more than most people. However, as one of the comedians of the zodiac, you also tend to diffuse argument with humour.

You’re an open minded soul and receptive to learning and education. However, once you’ve absorbed knowledge you become attached to your ideas and opinions, as you believe they represent a universal truth. It’s your mission to impart that truth to the wider world. This makes you a ideal candidate for professions such as law, politics, teaching, academic research, journalism and the media, public relations and any other profession needing you to be mentally agile, charming and persuasive. Mental flexibility is an asset with this placement.

Venus in Sagittarius

Venus in Sagittarius loves to run free. You love fresh air, travel and wide open spaces – and many of you will enjoy horse-riding/racing too. You express this Venus sign in the open air, preferably somewhere exotic, or by pushing yourself to the limit – and beyond. You love adventures – and romantic adventures – and you may have many of them. You love spontaneity because micro-management takes the fun out of life. In relationships, you hate to be tied down, so the ideal partner needs to either give you free rein to be yourself, or be prepared to drop everything at a moment’s notice to join you on your latest voyage.

You may fall in love while on one of your adventures. Your partner may be ethnically or culturally different from you. You may even meet your partner overseas. This is an intellectual sign, so you may be attracted to your partner’s mind; intelligence is something you value. You may love academic study, or your studies may take you overseas, perhaps influencing your career choice. You’re outgoing with a vast network of social contacts, but your love of life will impact on your finances. You may spend large amounts, but you’re unlikely to worry about it because of your ‘easy come, easy go’ attitude.

Mars in Sagittarius

Mars in Sagittarius, is exciting and energetic, and that energy propels you in all directions. It’s a restless expression of Mars energy and – like Mars in Aries – it’s impulsive. When you have Mars in this sign, you may be passionate about exploration – mentally, intellectually or physically – but you will happily change direction if circumstance and opportunity show you another way. It may appear as if your motivation has burnt out, but that assumption misses the point. This Mars may seem easily distracted, but in reality, this placement makes you highly reactive to change.

This is an enthusiastic Mars that acts without restraint. All things are possible with this Mars sign, as this is a naturally optimistic and adventurous placement. However, your enthusiasm can be overwhelming; those with this placement may be dynamic but rash. However, your limitless confidence and natural good luck enable you to turn things to your advantage – and that includes sexually. You are, however, commitment phobic. Freedom and excess can make you a fun partner, but not the most reliable. There are no limits to your aims.

Jupiter in Sagittarius

Saturn in Sagittarius

Uranus in Sagittarius

Uranus was in Sagittarius between 1981 and 1988. In a relatively affluent world, no rite of passage was complete without travelling long distances – often alone. Going beyond geographical limits was possible because the previous Uranus transit in this sign made it so; the Wright brothers proved that powered flight was possible in 1903. The rest is history – and Uranus in this sign has a history of enabling travel on a grand scale. The ‘Grand Tour’, where Europe’s upper classes travelled abroad for their edification and improvement, dates back to an outbreak of peace in 1648. And, yes, Uranus was in Sagittarius then too.

There is a pioneering spirit to the Uranus in Sagittarius generation. To be unafraid to follow your own star is a great thing, but this combination can result in zealotry. The latest Uranus in Sagittarius generation came of age in a world increasingly dominated by fundamentalist beliefs. Identity politics. Religious orthodoxy. Tribalism. To be recognised as an individual and an equal is a good thing, but stoking social division is less so. Intellectual liberation and deeper understanding often coexist with fanatical belief systems when Uranus is in this sign.

Neptune in Sagittarius

Neptune last visited this sign between 1970-1984. The planet of peace and universal love in the sign of expansion and freedom brought forth a generation that moved on from the ‘hippie’ age to the era of consumer-led capitalist culture. It was an expansionist, forward looking and optimistic time. So, how did that define this generation? Neptune traditionally rules this sign and it dissolves any limits on expansion, so this period saw the development of the blockbuster; films, books, newspapers. Everything became huge, including our hairstyles and waistlines.

‘More is more’ defined the Neptune in Sagittarius years. Loosening constraints led to a loosening of restraint, but when that generation came of age, what then? Neptune’s illusions vanished like the morning mist. You cannot have it all. And that’s a tough thing to accept. Those born between 1970-1984 attained majority at a time when the dream was fading fast. There was a price to be paid and they were the generation expected to pick up the tab. Issues of civic responsibility loom large for many in this generation; personal freedom may also be an issue. The irony is that for the freedom generation, almost nothing is free.

Pluto in Sagittarius

Pluto in Sagittarius places the planet of extremes in the sign of belief systems. What could possibly go wrong? From 1995-2008, Pluto destroyed orthodoxy on a grand scale. It’s recent history; there were regular terrorist acts predicated on long-held grievances, and retribution justified by religious or other ideological beliefs. Wars fought in the name of ‘freedom’ were – in reality – who controlled the world’s resources – especially oil. If you want oil – and have wealth – you have power. When Pluto is in Sagittarius, it seems a lot can – and does – go wrong.

The events of that time may have transformed the way we think about the world. Will this generation be polarised by the dynamics that rocked the world at the time they were born? As I write this, the Pluto in Sagittarius generation are young; some are young adults, while the youngest of the cohort are still at school. They are maturing at a time when many want the freedom to be extreme. Pluto cycles take a long time to play out, but the dynamics of ‘extremism’ will play out during each cycle – and this one will be no exception.

Sagittarius Ascendant (AC)

With Sagittarius Rising you came into this world with a backpack and guidebook. At an early age, you packed your teddy bear and favourite toy into a bag and declared you were running away from home – only to reappear next mealtime. As a child, you may have been a ferociously quick learner and precociously aware of the world around you. The environment, natural world, foreign languages and cultures probably intrigued you and you immersed yourself in tales of adventure and exploration – and you may still do that to this day.

You are happiest expressing who you are through the wide lens of Sagittarius’s bold, adventurous, active, carefree and intellectual world, as this allows you to be your solar self in a cerebral, yet enthusiastic manner. You see the world through Sagittarius eyes and this makes you an impressive intellectual force. It may also affect your eyesight. You push the boundaries of human experience while others stand and stare. If you have Jupiter rising or a ninth house emphasis in your natal chart, you may share some Sagittarius characteristics.

Sagittarius Midheaven (MC)

Sagittarius at the Midheaven may make you philosophical about your career prospects, but It also steers you towards exciting careers that satisfy your sense of adventure. You hate to be restricted, and you hate working for people who are incapable of thinking big. You’re the ideal candidate to set the vision for any project, scheme or organisation, with the proviso that someone else fills in the detail. You are enthusiastic and inspiring, a natural manager and team leader. You need to believe in what you do. Travel – either physically or intellectually is essential. Freedom to set the agenda is also preferred.

How is this MC reflected in your ‘work-face’? A Sagittarius Midheaven may make you the ‘life and soul of the party’, ebullient and restless, yet optimistic and generous. You may be regarded as wise and knowledgeable, a mentor to younger or less experienced colleagues. For many with this MC, teaching or lecturing could be a valid career choice. This is the sign most linked with higher education, so a high level qualification may be essential for the work that you do. To obtain a high level of knowledge may be your ambition, but try to avoid being a ‘know it all’, as it’s not a good look.
