This month’s new Moon in Scorpio occurs on November 1st, a day celebrated as ‘The Day of the Dead’ in Mexico. In Christian tradition, November 1st is known as All Souls Day and it follows All Hallows Eve – better known as Halloween. In Mexico, they take All Souls Day several steps beyond something which we now associate with burnt out pumpkins that no-one seems to know the best way to dispose of – and by the way, don’t put them out to be eaten by the local wildlife, as they can be toxic to some animals.

In Mexico, The Day of the Dead is a celebration that predates Christianity and it’s a major family celebration, where the spirits of departed family members are welcomed back into the home. It may sound spooky, but to me it resonates with a fundamental Scorpio theme: there is a profound acknowledgment of the eternal cycle of life. All things that are born must live and die – and that includes us. It’s a truth that most of us try to avoid, but Scorpio doesn’t work that way. It’s about confronting our existential dread – and the Mexicans confront that fear with a celebration.

New Moon in Scorpio: The Basics

What better way is there to signify death and rebirth than a new Moon in Scorpio? For all its bad press, this is the sign of renewal and the new moon in Scorpio marks the beginning of a process of renewal. The new cycle begins on November 1st at 12:46(UT) when the Moon is at 9˚34′ Scorpio. Those of you with planets and points close to the degree of that sign (or in a close aspect to it) will notice its impact most of all. Scorpio isn’t known for instant revelation, so the things that crawl out of the woodwork may do so in the coming weeks.

Signs have themes and Scorpio themes are going to dominate the events that are linked to this new moon. This is a sign connect to investigation and things long buried coming to light. Secrets may surface and they may not be easy to deal with. The opposite is also true, we bury things under the influence of Scorpio; that may be literally so in a few instances, but often that burial is symbolic. If you are affected in this way, you may have to draw the line under certain issues and move on – and that’s a Scorpio specialty too.

The effects of this new moon may be personal to you, but we often see its themes on show in the world around us, so look out for Scorpio themes lurking in the recesses of the newscasts and social media. There is going to be a lot of Plutonic stuff emerging in the next weeks and months – and events will culminate around the time of the full moon in Scorpio in spring 2025. Plots, crimes, misdemeanors, embezzlement, fraud and scandals may be part of that Scorpio mix – and they will inevitably involve the wealthy and powerful.

New Moon in Scorpio: The Aspects

Every lunation has its own chart – and the new moon in Scorpio chart seems complex. in true Scorpio style, some deconstruction is required – and that shows us that there are two sets of aspects in play in this new moon chart. First, there is an ‘underlay’ – the grand trine, minor trine and mystic rectangle combination that connects the background noises – the Mercury Uranus opposition, the Mars – Pluto opposition and everything in between. The new Moon in Scorpio is part of the ‘overlay’ – and that’s important as the overlay shows the nature of the new conditions that are being seeded now.

New Moon in Scorpio Trine Saturn Retrograde in Pisces

The new Moon trines Saturn retrograde in Pisces. This is a sign of stability – and it’s already underway or will happen as fast as Saturn allows it to happen. Saturn retrograde shows an easing of pressure, so this new moon in Scorpio has the potential to transform any situation that is now chaotic or long overdue for a change. It’s a sign of being grounded and emotionally stable – and, above all it’s calm. It’s an aspect that suggests taking things in your stride. It’s also concerned with security and a need to be practical or pragmatic. It’s dependable and committed; there are no complications and surprises.

What does that tell you? For those of you feeling this lunation, it suggests calm after the storm, so if there have been storms raging in some part of your life, this may come as a blessing. Storms in the context of this new moon in Scorpio, are not always external; Scorpio is an introspective sign and Saturn is retrograde in Pisces, another watery, intuitive ans introverted sign. Retrograde planets are often internalized, so your ‘storms’ may have been inner fears, blockages and tensions – and hopefully, they will start to ease – even if it takes time.

The big question: will this new moon in Scorpio signal a shift to more stable conditions in the outer world? The potential is there – but don’t expect any form of overnight sensation. Stability may be a long time coming, as Saturn delays and often shows some obstacles may yet have to be overcome. This aspect connects the new moon to a t-square aspect involving Venus and Jupiter, with Saturn the apex planet. What this suggests is issues of money and indulgence; some of you may have had too much of a good thing.

The Venus – Jupiter – Saturn T-square

Reality always hits whenever Saturn is involved. And often, that’s a good thing. In the new moon chart, Venus in Sagittarius is opposite Jupiter in Gemini – and that is an extravagant fire and air combination. It’s also an ill-disciplined combination that promises much and delivers little, as it can be a lazy and careless planetary mix. It’s hazy with the detail, easily distracted, prone to excess and fundamentally complacent. And that’s why Saturn at the apex of this t-square is such an important player: reality bites, and in a t-square combination, it bites hard.

Saturn is retrograde in Pisces, and that signifies a karmic moment. Accountability is a big word – and it’s a theme that’s going to unfold over the coming months as you have to work on some of the issues that the Venus – Jupiter opposition is holding up for inspection. With the new moon’s trine connection to Saturn, that’s what you’re going to be dealing with. Wherever you’ve become complacent, overspent, avoided what’s in front of you or taken the easy way out, you’ll need to start addressing those issues. Fortunately, this t-square provides you with an optimistic, ‘can do’ attitude – as long as you take a realistic view.

This dynamic is also going to appear in the outer world – and I’m going to call it ‘cautious optimism’. There is room for improvement, but it won’t be easy and that may be true of the general economic situation where excessive growth or inflation may need to be reined in. This combination suggests there is a high price to be paid – and that may have a broad interpretation. There is a high price to be paid for monetary excess and there is a high price to be paid for playing fast and loose with the truth – and that is linked to Jupiter in Gemini in particular. Is the new moon in Scorpio a day of reckoning? It could be…

And it’s also an opportunity for healing and correcting a sub-optimal situation. The t-square is eased by a beneficial aspect to Chiron. This suggests a process of recovery, but an important part of that will be to admit culpability. Healing involves acknowledging vulnerability and weakness in overcoming trauma – and confronting trauma and insecurity may be an important part of the healing process in the months to come. Chiron is in Aries; having the courage to confront your (or our) demons and handle conflict will be an important part of this process.

New Moon in Scorpio: The Background Noise

The background noise to this new moon is the complex aspect pattern that’s dominating the heavens right now. The collection of aspects that connect Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are showing where we are now. The oppositions between Mercury and Uranus is defiant and argumentative, contrary for its own sake and shows how communications have broken down. It’s destabilizing and shocking – especially in the realm of speeches and ideas. The ‘unsayable’ is being said right now.

Mars opposite Pluto is intense and conflicted, highly volatile and confrontational. You know that, because that’s where the world is now. The easy aspects – including the grand trine and the mystic rectangle – signify a stalemate with a lot of noise, destructive actions and no real solutions. The new moon in Scorpio signals the shift towards breaking the deadlock – that’s evident in the t-square – and the positive attributes of Venus and Jupiter need to be worked with to ease the stalemate. It’s a tall order, but the new moon in Scorpio shows the will is there – if we choose to work with it.
