The seventh sign of the zodiac, Libra is symbolised by the Scales, and is the only zodiac sign to be represented by an inanimate object. If you have a Libra Sun or Moon or your rising sign in Libra, you’ll be aware of a need to keep life in balance. Opinions, schedules, family and friends seem to demand time, effort and decisions from you. Taking sides is tough when Venus-ruled Libra needs to see everything from both sides. Libra-type qualities are also evident in people who have a strong Venus in their natal chart; for example, Venus rising in the first house, or in conjunction with the Sun or Moon, or in the seventh house.

Libra: Energy Type

The zodiac signs represent fundamental energy types, and each sign determines how those energies are expressed – ‘how’ being the key word. When the Sun, Moon, planets, cardinal points and house cusps in your natal chart fall in Libra, they express in that sign’s unique style. The luminaries and planets represent ‘what’ is being expressed and the natal chart houses signify ‘where’, but the ‘how’ part of the equation is always governed by the zodiac sign’s particular qualities.

In astrology, energy types are defined by the zodiac sign’s element (fire, earth air or water). Each element has a characteristic form of motivation and influence on behaviour. In addition, elemental energy is expressed in a particular mode: energy is one thing, but how it’s applied is something else. Modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) determines how the raw energy functions. And then there’s polarity: is the sign positive or negative? Polarity determines how energy is processed, by being externalised (extroverted) or internalised (introverted). Libra energy type is air-cardinal-positive. What does that mean?

The Libra Myth

Libra: Ruled by Venus

The sign of love is ruled by Venus. Venus rules two signs, Taurus and Libra, and Libra sees the airy qualities of Venus come to the fore. Libra is the most aesthetically aware sign of the zodiac, and Libra subjects appreciate beauty, art and design and often have a great sense of style. Their sense of harmony also drives them to make the world a better place; many Libra subjects are involved with good causes and work to bring a greater sense of fairness to the world. And of course, being Libra subjects, they love to share their concerns with the one they love.

Libra Character

Libra is often accused of being indecisive, but as an Air Sign you’re essentially expressive and have a need to rationalise the world around you. It’s important for you to analyse and critically evaluate your environment, to create a rational, ordered and harmonious whole. Libra is a born mediator. You believe in talking things through to find a shared position – and you’re happiest when everyone comes around to your way of thinking. That is the true spirit of compromise.

Libra’s communication and social skills make them great team leaders or the person you need to front a project. Their sense of fairness makes them a good boss; Libra will always provide an informed and objective view on the issues that matter.

Libra In Love

Libra is invested in their partner, as Libra is one of the signs for which co-dependency is a lifestyle choice. Libra needs to be part of a partnership – and finds it difficult to adjust to the single life. You often immerse yourself in a long term, committed relationship and you are the most loyal and devoted of partners. Your relationship means so much to you that you will support it through thick and thin. Beware of getting too much ‘thin’, as your gift for compromise could be pushed too far.

To get the best from a partnership you need to value yourself as much as you value the person you love. So Libra, you must learn to take as well as give. You have the diplomatic skills to persuade your lover that you’re acting in the best interests of both of you – and actually, you are. Reciprocity is the key to your relationship success, and that can only come about with a little loving give and take from you both.
