The Virgo Myth
The story of the Virgo constellation – and this zodiac sign – is little known, and that’s appropriate for a sign as modest and unassuming as Virgo. Who was the celestial virgin? According to Greek mythology, Virgo is associated with the goddess Astraea. In some versions of the ancient legends, Astraea was the sister of Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis, but she was also the virgin goddess of justice and innocence, purity and precision. According to legend, she dwelt on earth with humankind, until our most base instincts became too much for her to bear. Zeus placed her in the heavens for eternity.
The qualities associated with Astraea are instantly recognisable as belonging to Virgo. This sign is earthy, yet refined. Discrimination, perfection, precision, detail and improvement are core characteristics of Virgo, but Astraea is also associated with virtue and virtuous behaviour. There is moral authority at the core of this myth, and that aligns with what we know about Virgo: discrimination extends to right and wrong. Virgo can be judgemental. LIbra’s scales are also associated with this goddess; equality and equity are the end product of Virgo’s discriminatory drives.
Virgo: Ruled by Mercury
Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the ruling planet of two signs – Virgo and Gemini. If Gemini is the spin doctor of the zodiac, Virgo is the fact checker – a natural editor who uses words with precision. The typical Virgo mindset is concise and analytical. Mercury’s famed dexterity also makes Virgo subjects good with their hands. Virgo knows know how things work, how to put things together and how to take them apart. Flat pack furniture holds no fears for Virgo, nor does a well-crafted argument. The Virgo month falls at the end of summer, as the world cools and prepares for Autumn. Virgo knows instinctively how important it is to be prepared. You’re happiest when life is well organised.
